HSV’s luxo-barge has landed – the HSV Grange
May 22, 2007 by Paul Maric
Surely a Holden Statesman or Caprice would do the job for most. If the V6 unit wasn’t enough, a 270kW V8 variant may also be opted. If those two engines weren’t enough, HSV has developed the HSV Grange.
HSV has gone above and beyond with the new HSV Grange, offering the utmost of luxuries, whilst also catering for the enthusiast’s power needs.
According to John Clarke, HSV Chief Engineer, “We focused on enhancing this car, to improve driveability. Individually calibrated Magnetic Ride Control, an LS2 V8 307kW engine, a premium HSV four piston brake package and tailored Electronic Stability Control system, make WM Grange one of our best cars to wear the Lion and Helmet badge”.
The WM HSV Grange is being earmarked as a Long Wheel Base Senator, adding extra features such as: Tri-zone climate control; dual rear LCD screens with headphone inputs; Xenon headlights and Bose sound system.
Not surprisingly, fuel consumption figures were non-existent in the press release. But on that same token, buyers of the Grange are likely to care little about its fuel use.
Under the bonnet, HSV’s 307kW LS2 V8 engine powers the rear wheels through a 6-speed GM gearbox. The HSV Grange is available for sale immediately at $82,990.
Other HSV news suggests that 2007 is lining up to be another record breaking year for the Clayton body. The first four months of 2007 have seen HSV sell 1,685 vehicles, almost double the 2006 figure.
Although our invite to the launch never made it to the inbox, you will be sure to see a Grange road test in the near future.

Looks great, although it is hard to spot the difference inside between the Caprice and the Grange. Infact the exterior looks pretty much the same too, you’d hope the extra 37kw would make the difference.
Oh man, its beautiful – I just want one ;)
not really, its a little to expensive me thinks,
I wonder if FPV will ever get into performance luxuries? Although with the Fairlane discontinued, I guess it rules that out.
If its anything like the R8 – it will average 16L/100km on a good week. Prob looking at around 20L/100km when your having fun..
No wonder GM are worried their engines arent going to make the cut if/when US emission regulations come in
I wouldn’t mind one, I’d be just as happy with a Caprice riding on 20′ wheels :D. It’s interesting that Holden brought out their LWB cars so soon after the launch on the Commodore and the styling is ten times better than any previous Statesman/Caprice.
Alborz , I knew you need therapy after the Lambo .
I think you see BEAUTIFUL ??? because!!!!! .IT LOOKS LIKE A BIG 4 DOOR E46 M3 !!!!!!!!
The vents in the guards look like M3 ,HEADLIGHTS 5 SERIES,WHEELS M3!!!! Weld the back doors shut and it becomes a 2 door. SOOOO guess what the NEW MONARRROOO will look like ?????? Will they every get original ???
Myke:
They released the LWB variants so quickly because of the mass export opportunities. Ford on the other hand have no export deal, so they have no incentive to have LWB vehicles for Australia as there simply aren’t enough sales.
actually holden have taken design cues from audi, not bmw.
big chunky flared guards are an audi trademark
and also the extended back window (D-pillar), which is from Audi
They may also have them Sam but BMW M3s also have flared guards .
AND what about the 50/50 weight they copied ??? Holden admited in one of those Wheels Mags they wanted to creat a BMW STYLE. “They” even refered it to a BOGAN BMW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What about the rest I mentioned DO AUDI also have them??? Another Bogan BMW from Holden !!!!!!!!
i think theyve copied every european car and thrown it all into one package really haha
japs have done it for a long time as well. except they can do it the right way
they seem to have a good set of features available, wonder if it includes an energy polarizer as well LOL
I think they knocked that one on the head already !!!!!
Thanks for the STIR SAM !!! It doesn’t take much for me to get my back up with Holden .Sorry for the big come back!! You would know that already though!!
The Heinz car I call it!
I hate Holden, peroid. But I don’t actually mind this vehicle. The looks on the front are sweet. The rear end does not get those retard GTS taillights, it gets almost identical ones to the Chev Impala. It also gets an alright side profile. The interior looks alright, and the fact that it uses a Bose audio system shows the effort Holden is putting in to this bomb. If it wore say a Cadillac badge, have some ever larger wilder air intakes with side repeaters, and larger and sweet rims it would look so much better.
Damo,Damo,Damo. It is clear it’s late where your from. Go to bed! Good night from the West!!!!!!!!!!Lisa
Bloody hell, someone who bashes Holden more than me. I think the “Bavarian Missile” is practically an extreamist :)
I’d have to say both you and Sam are correct. The external styling is very much Audi but not quite as good. But Holden do appear to compare themselves square on with BMW. Even their add compaigns pull no punches in targeting BMW. I’m amazed BWM haven’t responded at all in their add campaigns, or maybe they don’t care what Holden and Holden weekly (Wheels Mag) has to say…
As for the Grange its not a bad looking car at all. I just can’t see HSV selling many.
I think someone is a little slow on the uptake with regards to FPV. If you look closely you’ll find that FPV have 2 performance luxuries. The FORCE6 and the FORCE8. These cars are classy and more than adequitely live up to thier category of PERFORMANCE. Although I must admit ford hasn’t spent $1 billion making these.
Hey knuckle heads why are you talking about Holden?
I thought this car is from the HSV mob ???
Please explain…
Why are we talking about Holden when we were talking about Holden Special Vehicles (aka HSV)?
Dude, you need more sugar in your coffee :)
Ok had some more sugar thanks, HSV and Holden are different companies but of course you knew that? Thats what i was trying to say as you keep banging on about Holden bringing out this car when its HSV (a company in its own right(completley seperate entity to Holden)Understand ??
“HSV and Holden are different companies but of course you knew that?”
From Holdens website:-
“Associated Companies
Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) creates niche premium performance luxury cars sourced from Holden. ”
The Grange is based on new Holden Caprice platform, so clearly its valid to talk about HSV & Holden in the same context just like everyone else does. Except you of course!
It would be different if the Grange was based on something completely different.
Now back to the important stuff…. Black with one if your going to the kitchen :)
Does a Boot Full of Grange come with the car.
beautifull car that wuld look better in flesh. fukin nice
The rear is stunning especially with the quad exhaust and fat arse tyres …. the front, well there something about the headlights, the lighter coloured part on top of them, not a massive fan.
Overall $80k I think is abit much.
The Grange looks fantastic there’s a great video over at the carshowroom.com.au website that gives a closer look.
I agree though Paul over $80k seems a bit much… out of my price range anyway!
Bavarian Missile: You must be a Ford man, in which case show some leniency to ca car manufacturer that is willing to try and upgrade Australias production cars. Holden and HSV have used BMW suspension and brake setups for years, HSV used the Magnetic Ride Control which can be found in Ferrari. The style? OMG its mesmerizing… It doesn’t matter where it comes from it still looks good. It is a flagship not to holden but to Australia because if memory serves it is Australias safest car isn’t it? i mean ESP, MRC and TC off i cant get my GTS to lock up stopping from 145kph to 0 in about 45 meters. and believe me there has been many times where some idiot has jumped out and this has had to happen. So stop finding an excuse to diss it and just be thankful that Holden brought out something for Ford to steal ideas off.
sorry i had to rant :)
Switchie, a bit further up you’ll see Bavarian Missile gives her cheerio as “Lisa”.
Switchie………gee another that assumes!!!!Why do guys assume that all that come on these sites are blokes.Just cause I don’t have an original name like COBRA Girl…M3 CHICK…….or maybe Bikini Babe!!!!!
Well at least you have it right on the copying from Holden mate! Ford copied what from Holden though????? Mate Im over this argument !What are you doing 145 klms anyway….Im not sure who the idiot is there! Grow up!
shaking head………Thanks Watto !
Maybe I should call myself Bavarian MISS ile
So Switchie, you are making fun of Ford because you reccon the VE is something Ford will have to copy ideas off?…
Here is some news for you. :)
Look at the XK Falcon and it’s rival at that time, the FB Holden. Now look at how different they are….
Now look at the next Holden after the FB, the EJ…. NOTICE THE BIG CHANGE?
BM you might need to use your orignal name?
The reason Holden brought forward the release of the Statesman/Caprice range to coincide with the release of the Commodore; whereas previously Holden released the Sedan followed by the Ute and Wagon then The Statesman was purely to take advantage of the demand for the car in the Middle East..
Mind you at the time of the Statesmans Release Holden hadn’t decided whether or not to build the VE Ute on the Sedans Short Wheelbase or the Statemans Long Wheelbase.
In the end they went with LWB for the Ute and SWB for the Sports-Wagon.
Unfortunately though no Crewman One Tonner or Sandman.. YET
Great job by HSV! FPV does not have any car to take it on!
Oh! I whish there were going to be a new sandman!
Duck,
just go and get a sandman canopy that someone designed for the commy ute they make it look like the real deal
Panel van sounds good, but will it have the room for the good…..you know! :)
I thought that andrew M but think how much money Holden would get if they made the Sandman Again!
Gone are those days…….OZ! Boys bring the girls home now…unlike in my day! “If the vans a rockin don’t bother knocking”
That sounds allright… The new HSV Sandman!!!
BM, so you telling me???
Duck,
they wouldnt make a cent off it.
it would end up just like the monaro, tonner and crewman etc.
sounds good at the start but once the hype dies off it holden looks in their pockets and finds them not so full.
Didn’t Holden make a VY Panel van, but didn’t last long?
Duck! What do you mean “FPV does not have any car to take it on!” Have you never heard of the FPV Force 6 and Force 8? Sorry but they are by far the better cars in this category. The Force 6 is also going to beat Grange in performance, as it has the F6 Barra 270 engine.
HSV, just give up.
The Azza IS BACK??
Telling you……..I prefer it happening under my roof than sneaking around somewhere OZ…….I learn’t to drive in a PV OZ, their days are gone !
Holden didn’t make a VY-Z panelvan.. they merely offered an optional canopy to VY-Z ute owners so that their ute could look like the [Mambo] Sandman panelvan from a couple of years ago – the one that caused such controversy in the USA
Because iunlike the Mambo Van which had the rear window etc removed so that you could pass things through the cabin.. The VY-Z Vans still had the rear window which mant it was just a ute with a bloody big canopy
I’d like to see a VE Sandman.. But I doubt that its on Holdens radar at the moment, However; the Chev HH-R will be a nice substitute….
Azza,
I thought those two take on the Senator!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So holden has lost a few cars in there line up?
Duck Andrew M is right. You got to remember that with the Australian car market being as competitive as it is not to mention being as small as it is.. manufacturers can’t really afford to put the money required into R&D projects for cars like the Crewman Monaro or sandman as these are relatively low volume cars.
Things could channge if Holdens export markets increase and they’re able to recover capital costs more quickly which will enable them to put the money into other projects.. Like a Sandman.. but I doubt it
So Duck if you want a VE Panelvan so badly I suggest you buy either a VZ Wagon or wait for the VE Sportswagon then drive it to Hillier Conversions near Tenterfield in NSW where they will gladly stretch it widen it lower it etc to turn it into a one off street machine.
The guys there are experts they spend most of their time building limos or hearses.. they also built the AU Ford Coupe Prototype among other cas including the Raptor Ute
I remember the Raptor ute. First time I’ve ever really, REALLY wanted a ute. Hadn’t heard of the AU Coupe Prototype though. What is that, Wheelnut?
The Force 6 and 8 are more comparable to the Senator. as the Force is based on the Fairmont and the Senator is based on the Calais
Yet because magazines like Motor like to have at least one [local] performance car comparison in each issue of their mags
Because unlike the European magazines we have a limited number of local car to choose from..
I mean they test the Force against the Senator in Jan; they test the Clubbie against the GT in Feb and by Oct they’re done them all and run out of ideas so they cross over and start to compare cars from different classes etc
Therefore; some people think that the Statesman is comparable to the Aurion or whatever. Yet you wouldn’t really compare a Yaris to a Koenigsegg would you?
And that’s the main reason I feel the Aussie Top gear will fail: week 1 Commodore V Falcon.. Wk2: Commodore V Falcon [Ute].. Wk3 Pursuit V Maloo.. Wk4: ?
Hey Wheelnut,
tell me where i can get a picture of a AU Coupe Prototyoe?
it was an AU XR8 made into a 2 door and it was painted gold in colour if i remember correctly
The AU Coupe was essentially an AU Fairmont with the normal beadlights and taillights but it had 2 dooors and the roofline similar to that of a Mustang
version 1.0 was preety boring but with version 2.0 [as I recall] they dropped in a supercharged 5.4 litre; added XR8 headlights and a unique bodykit.. it also had an sony x-plod strereo and Recaro interior – by Roman Autotek.
It was painted in a colour similar to citric acid
