Hyundai to upsize van range with Sprinter rivals

Hyundai is set to expand its commercial van range with new models to compete with big-name European package haulers.

Two new large commercial models - a high-top, long wheelbase van and a single-cab van-based ute - are set to soon join the brand's ranks, giving Hyundai new models to rival vehicles such as the Renault Master and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.

CarAdvice's spy photographers caught the new van and trayback models undergoing winter testing in Europe, and claimed the brand didn't want the photos distributed - the South Korean brand even offered to buy the photos to ensure they didn't appear on the internet.

That plan fell through, according to our photo source, because a Hyundai senior research engineer known as Mr Lee "forgot to make the payment so that's why we are sharing the photos with you".

The new models would likely sit above the iLoad and iMax vans and, in a similar fashion to the aforementioned European-focused large vans, would be offered in a range of sizes and bodystyles.

Our spy also managed to get some images of the interior of the van, which look very close to production-ready. A prominent dashboard media and information screen featuring satellite navigation sits close to the console mounted gear-shifter, and it appears the van range will offer all-wheel-drive as a diff-lock button is present.

No engine details have been made available, but it is likely the van line will include a 2.2-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder engine - possibly a spinoff of the engine seen in the Santa Fe SUV.

No official comment has been offered by Hyundai.
