2016 Chevrolet Volt spied

The new-generation 2016 Chevrolet Volt has been caught undergoing testing ahead of its expected debut next year.

The all-new petrol-electric hybrid model will reportedly be built on the same underpinnings as the next-generation Cruze small car, a move that will save General Motors significant engineering and development costs and also shave the price of the car significantly.

No details have been made official, but the US maker is expected to offer the Volt in two trim levels: a cheaper model will be equipped with a smaller-capacity battery pack that would give it a lower driving range, while a better-equipped model with a higher electric driving range will be offered as the flagship. The current car is available in one trim only, priced at $59,990, and offers about 90km of range using battery power before its 1.4-litre four-cylinder engine kicks in to generate power for the batteries.

While these first images of the new Volt give little away in terms of the car's styling, it is expected to carry over the streamlined, swooping roof and shallow glasshouse of the current car. The roof, according to our spies, may also boast a solar panel for extra back-up.

Rumours of a second body style for the Volt persist. Chevrolet has long been expected to follow the lead of Toyota's Prius range and offer a more practical MPV-style wagon, though there has been no confirmation of any such model.

The new Volt is expected to be produced in the US at GM's Hamtramck plant from July 2015.

CarAdvice has contacted Holden for comment on whether the new-generation Volt will be offered locally. The brand has struggled to sell the current model in any real volume, moving only 191 units since the car went on sale in September 2012.
