2010 Holden Astra images leaked

April 14, 2009 by Matt Brogan

Following spy pics we discovered last month, we have this morning found even more leaked pictures of the 2010 Opel (Holden) Astra.

The new images show the standard version of the hatch, as well as a sketch of the all-new wagon. The next generation Astra is expected to make its official debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The 2010 Astra will ride on GM’s new Delta II platform and will most likely share GM’s new turbo charged 1.4-litre four cylinder engine as will be used in the Chevrolet Volt and Cruze.

With many of the new Astra’a design cues coming from the equally impressive Opel Insignia, we can’t help but wonder if some of the technology featured in its bigger brother will also trickle in to this smaller segment such as the innovative Front Camera System.

The Front Camera System (FCS – yes another bunch of letters to remember) will not only act as a lane departure warning system, but can actually recognise roadside signs including speed limits! That should keep it busy here Down Under.

An intriguing headlamp cluster looks like it could feature LED daytime running lights, while inside we see buttons for heated seats (visible towards the bottom of the centre stack), and a “Tour” and “Sport” switch at the top of the centre stack.

We’ll now eargerly await Frankfurt for further details.

  1. Reckless1 says:

The styling of the front of this car is brilliant – none of the open fish mouth in favour with most designers at the moment.

But the pointy rear window and pointy rear quarter vents a-la Focus are old hat and awful.

  2. Ethan says:

i’ve never been a big fan of the astra… but this actually looks quite smart…especially the interior… and also the back and the side profile… nice…

  3. Tom says:

I was going to say i love the back but are impartial to the front!

  4. Nick says:

the front reminds me very much of the first mazda 3….is it just me?

  5. Leon70 says:

Actually, it’s the rear three quarter view that reminds me of the last Mazda 3.

  6. RoFlmaTiC says:

    This looks brilliant!

  7. SumoDog says:

If only Subaru could make Impreza look like that…

  8. Horse says:

    Dull, boring yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwn

  9. Golfschwein says:

It’s brilliantly done and a fine looker. It’s not original, as elements here have already been well tried on Mazda 3, Impreza, Fiat Bravo, Hyundai i30 and Gawd…even the previous generation Ugly Camry, from which it borrows the scallop shape in the lower sections of the rear passenger doors.

    The difference is, it gels.

  10. mack says:

    I think they’re on a winner here..

  11. Goodfa says:

I hope this is the car that Holden build next year.

    Much better than the Cruze.

  12. ZoomZoom says:

Nick your right and Mazda has even accused them of copying the style. (especially that rear quarter)

  13. Mark B says:

It’s a very good looking evolution of the current-gen Astra, though I agree it’s a bit derivative of the Mazda3 about the rear quarter window line.

But will we even see this car? If Holden is building the Cruze locally, why would they import a competing vehicle with identical underpinnings? I doubt they’ll bother – more’s the pity, it looks heaps better than the Cruze.

  14. Golfschwein says:

Why build the Cruze when it can be imported from Korea as cheap as chips?

The platform’s the same, but the Cruze has a cheap beam axle at the rear, whereas the Astra has a more sophisticated multi-link independent set-up. It would be the more expensive of the two to build, and would undoubtedly have a higher quality interior that relects the price difference.

Holden apparently hasn’t confirmed what is to be built. We shouldn’t assume it’s the Cruze. I hope like mad it’s the Astra.

  15. Falcodore says:

Yeah, im hoping its this thats built here. Agree with Golfy about the Cruze.

  16. Bret says:

    Golf,
Reuss IS on record as saying that the Aus built Cruze will be virtually identical, inside and out, to the Korean built version.
“Apparently” that doesn’t confirm it for you?

  17. Hummerbug says:

Actually not a bad looker at all !

  18. Steve-Poyza says:

A very handsome looking car it is.
I think it is a great successor to the current gen.

  19. adam (aka mada) says:

Amazing, style a vehicle to look conservative and people love it!
This new astra breaks no new ground, same old same old.

  20. o says:

    I really like it
    everything just looks right

  21. Golfschwein says:

Bret, I stand corrected, but only if I’m wrong.

  22. Bret says:

Golf, let’s hope that the day will come when we see for ourselves.

Actaully, I’m tipping something along the lines of imported 5 door, Aus built 3 door, possibly even branded something else (like Torana?).
Expect the 3 door to still be built in Korea as well though, just not exported to Aus.

  23. AAA says:

60,000km timing belt or timing chains?

  24. JEKYL & HYDE says:

    aaa,

150k timing belt if its got the 103kw xer 1.8 ltr motor.

just heard a vicious rumour than holden are going to stop bringing them in.stay tuned…

  25. Bavarian Missile (.)(.) says:

80k recommend for timing belts………wouldnt listen to what manufacturers recommend…….seen plenty of belts worn at 70k needing replacement…….always pay to check when there around the 80k mark

  26. Robbie says:

It’s still going to be built like crap and break down after warranty.

  27. Sean says:

Will Opel stay part of the GM network? That’s probably the biggest “if” that needs to be worked out before we start thinking how the new Astra will look in our driveways.

The Cruze sedan and hatch will be built here, with Australia perhaps being the initial source of hatches for world markets. We can’t assume that Holden’s second car line will survive on domestic sales alone. It will have to have significant export potential.

One month to go and we get the Cruze. The Viva trio has gone from the Holden website…..Astra is too valuable a name to lose in the short term…..so where is Holden going with its small car strategy?

  28. Cupid Stunt says:

Heater controls to the lower dash. What are you on, it’s a fuzzy picture. My guess is they are for dual climate. Apparently the interior is apeing the Insignia’s
The one to have apparently will be with the new 1.6Turbo petrol as in the Insignia, good for 140Kw. Should be good for a focus thrashing!!

  29. Cupid Stunt says:

    try A u t o e x p r e s s for better interior pictures

  30. lazybones says:

Very nice, makes the Cruize look like a toilet. not that I would buy another Holden ever!

“Bret, I stand corrected, but only if I’m wrong.”

The plan is to import the Cruize now (this is being fast tracked!), then start production next year. So you’ll see the imported one very shortly followed by the identical locally made one.

This is all assuming the local Cruize doesn’t get dumped with the GM crisis.

So no locally made Astra boys :(

  31. JEKYL & HYDE says:

GUESS WHAT GUYS,THAT RUMOURS IS TRUE,AT LEAST SHORT TERM…NO ASTRA…

  32. james kujawski says:

Too Fat – Too Ugly. Of course it needs a turbo now! Once again, they screw up a good design and make it look like everything else. The 08 really only needed a few more ponies, not pounds. It figures. And why must every potential rocket have 4 doors? GM never learns. Where’s my bailout money bonus? U.S. buyers ought to get a rebate to buy this crap, but hey, it’ll only come out of taxpayers pockets like everything else. Why not take the NASA engineers to build a decent car and ship this pile to Mars?
