2015 Opel Corsa city car spied

CarAdvice’s spy photographers have captured the 2015 Opel Corsa testing in Germany, revealing new details of the next iteration of General Motors’ European city car ahead of its Paris motor show debut in October.

Much mystery surrounds the new Corsa, with some reports claiming the spied car is a new-generation model and others claiming it’s merely another significant facelift of the current fourth-generation hatchback.

Supporting the former theory is the fact that the fifth-gen Opel Corsa is already overdue. The existing model launched eight years ago in 2006 and was last facelifted in 2011.

The camouflaged Corsa prototype also features a completely restyled front end with a new grille and headlights reminiscent of the smaller Opel Adam, and new tail-lights that sit horizontally rather than vertically and span the rear quarter panels and tailgate.

A brand-new centre stack and steering wheel create a fresh look inside the cabin, and though not visible through strips of black material in this test car, a large infotainment screen is expected to sit at the top of the centre stack.

Adding weight to the assertion that the upcoming model is just a facelift, however, is the fact the spied test car appears identical to the existing model from side on, featuring the same doors, roofline and window shape, and its tailgate also seems to match that of the current car.

All-new models typically feature new body panels, seemingly suggesting the spied car is a facelift only, though cash-strapped Opel may have been forced to cut costs and launch its new-gen car with components carried over from the 2006 model.

The new Corsa will be offered with the brand’s new turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine, producing either 66kW or 85kW of power and 166Nm of torque.

The Corsa was sold in Australia during Opel’s ill-fated stint in our market in 2012-2013.

GM’s European city car may yet make a return to our shores in time, however, with Holden looking to its German sister company to fill out its future product portfolio.

Holden sold the Corsa rebadged as the Barina from 1994 to 2005, before switching to a Daewoo-built model that was produced in South Korea.
