The Citroen DS 5LS R concept is a fast French sedan aimed solely at Chinese buyers, and it has been revealed ahead of the 2014 Beijing auto show.
The French brand’s China-only DS 5LS sedan has been given a performance boost, with a new 1.6-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine producing a whopping 220kW of power and 400Nm of torque. That means it produces more power per litre of engine capacity than the manic Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG.
The engine is believed to be the same powerplant used in the Citroen DS3 and in sister brand Peugeot’s RCZ R and 308 R models, but it has been tweaked for even more grunt. It’s mated to a sequential automatic transmission with steering wheel paddleshifters. No performance claims have been made by the brand.
The DS 5LS R model rides on lowered suspension that slings it 15mm closer to the ground than the regular model, while its front track has been widened for better stability and traction.
The styling of the car highlights its sporting intent, with a full carbonfibre-styled body kit running across the lower front bumper, side skirts and rear bumper, and 20-inch wheels with grey inlays adding further bling. The signature styling line that runs from the windscreen to the tail of the car is finished in carbon grey rather than chrome, while the car also features broad styling stripes down its front doors.
Inside, the DS 5LS R concept appears to be finished to a luxurious standard. It features leather and alcantara trimming through the cockpit, including the DS line trademark “watchstrap” seat upholstery which features full grain leather, DS-embossed leather and alcantara. Tying the interior design to the exterior are matching Carmine Red design highlights and stitching across the dash, doors and centre armrest.
The standard DS 5LS sedan was revealed late in 2013. The car measures 4.70 metres long and 1.84m wide – about the same size as a Honda Accord Euro – with a wheelbase of 2.71m to offer good rear seat space, as that is a key factor for Chinese buyers. The car currently offers two 1.6-litre turbo engines, one with about 120kW and the other with 150kW.
Citroen has stated in the past that the brand won’t consider selling the DS 5LS model outside of China.
