The price of the Skoda Fabia has been cut by up to $4000 as the Czech brand looks to boost the popularity of its slow-selling city car and create room in its range for the all-new Rapid Spaceback small hatch that arrives next month.

The 2014 Skoda Fabia Ambition 77TSI five-speed manual hatch now starts at $15,990, making it $3000 cheaper than before, while the wagon version is down $4000 to $16,990.

The new pricing puts the Fabia in a more competitive position to take on the five-door variants of the Holden Barina (from $14,990), Mazda 2 (from $15,790), Ford Fiesta (from $15,825), Kia Rio (from $16,290) Hyundai i20 (from $16,590), Renault Clio (from $16,790), Suzuki Swift (from $15,990) and the Toyota Yaris (from $15,690), and now rightly positions it beneath its sister car, the Volkswagen Polo (from $16,990).

As a result of the price cut, the previously standard cruise control ($240) and fog lights ($270) are now optional on the entry-level Ambition. MY14 Fabias also feature some minor trim changes.

The price of the style-centric Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo hatch is also down $2400 to $19,590, while the prices of the sporty Fabia RS hatch and wagon have also been sharpened $800 to $27,190 and $28,190 respectively.

The optional seven-speed ‘DSG’ dual-clutch automatic transmission option continues to add $2300 to the price of the Ambition and Monte Carlo variants, and is standard in the RS.

The price restructure also sees the official discontinuation of the 63kW Fabia Limited Edition variant, which was available from $15,990 driveaway for a short time.

The repositioning creates room in Skoda Australia’s line-up for the new Rapid Spaceback, which may pick up the Fabia’s old $18,990 starting price when it slots beneath the mid-sized Octavia that starts at $21,690.

Skoda sold just 65 Fabias across the country in January and February, down 40 per cent on the previous year, continuing a downward spiral that saw the Fabia slide 23 per cent in 2013 to 555 units.
