Ford Mustang : 50th Anniversary Edition to pay tribute to fastbacks of the past
CarAdvice’s spy photographers have snapped what is believed to be a prototype of the Ford Mustang 50th Anniversary Edition – a limited production variant created to commemorate half a century of the famous American pony car.
Snapped in the parking lot of another American icon (our spies promise us they weren’t eating on the job!), the images reveal a number of unique styling elements across the exterior of the new coupe.
The test car’s front features a distinctive grille badge reminiscent of Mustangs of the past, with the famous chrome stallion emblem surrounded by a hexagonal border connected to a thin chrome crossbeam.
The black alloy wheels also appear to take inspiration from Edsel Ford II’s custom 1965 Mustang, while the Brembo brake calipers promise enhanced 21st century stopping performance.
Black plastic panels behind the door windows seem to disguise vertical louvers in what would be another subtle nod to the famous fastbacks of the 1960s.
Reports suggest the special edition Ford Mustang will only be available in white, paying tribute to the Wimbledon White paint finish of the original.
The ‘5.0’ wheel arch badging – alluding to the 5.0-litre V8 under the car’s long bonnet – also seems fitting for a 50th Anniversary Edition variant.
Ford will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the debut of the Mustang on April 16. The special edition is expected to appear at the New York auto show, which coincides with the car’s birthday.
The Ford Mustang will return to Australia in 2015, available in coupe and convertible body styles and with 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbo and 5.0-litre V8 petrol engines.
