Porsche four-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine confirmed

Porsche has confirmed persistent speculation that it will produce a new four-cylinder engine in the company's  signature horizontally opposed configuration.

The new four-cylinder 'boxer' engine is destined for the next-generation versions of the company's smallest sports cars, the Porsche Boxster convertible and Porsche Cayman coupe twins.

“We will continue with the downsizing strategy and develop a new four-cylinder boxer engine, which will see service in the next-generation Boxster and Cayman,” Porsche boss Matthias Müller told Germany's Auto, Motor und Sport magazine. “We will not separate ourselves from efforts to reduce CO2.”

Muller indicated to the magazine the engine, expected to be turbocharged at least for higher-output versions, could produce as much as "400ps" (295kW). That's more power produced by the fastest versions of the compact sports cars - the just-unveiled Porsche Boxster and Cayman GTS that use a normally aspirated 3.4-litre six-cylinder 'boxer' with 243kW (convertible) or 250kW (coupe).

The new sports car twins are still a while off with the second-generation versions only a relatively short time into their lifecycles.

A Porsche with a four-cylinder engine will be seen in action this year, however - the 919 hybrid race car that combines a direct fuel injection V4 engine with an electric motor and two energy recuperation systems.
