Bought a discovery 4 exactly 1 year ago. It got towed twice at x-mas as the computer could not find the smart key, firstly due due to an assembly fault and then a software upgrade to ignition.
Just drove to Bris, melb and back vehicle warning activated stating dynamic stability control had disengaged and emergency brake assist had disengaged, vehcile then went into low power mode (no power, coast to a stop).
Owners manual suggested driving with DSC off. I did this, however, problem got progressively worse until we could only drive 10k's before stopping and re-starting.
Bellbowrie motors at Coffs Harbour checked systems and downloaded a software upgrade, which has fixed the problem (so far as it only happened on 11/5/11).
This software upgrade has been available since May 2010.
The dealer tells me that as there are 42 computer systems in the vehicle and a myriad of upgrades available, it is to time consuming and costly to check each system at services to diagnose problems and then access and download software upgrades.
Apparently they won't do these checks until a problem arises and then the upgrades will be installed.
The dealer also told me that microsoft ugrade windows all the time and this is the same.
I don't drive my computer at 100km/h towing 1 ton trailers with 80 ton b-doubles bearing down on me as the engine management system cuts engine power.
Surely there can't be that many software upgrades that it is to time consuming and costly to do this at each service, heaven help me if there is.
If I had bought a Great Wall I would have expected these problems.
Neil66 I should have taken more notice of my mates dilema with the TD5 series 2 when he parked it in the dealer service entry and wouldn't move it until he got a new car due to the dealer not being able to rectify electrical/computer problems.

We bought our brand new Disco 4 and have experienced nothing but problems. The car, in cold conditions, kept regestering a gearbox fault and restricted performance. This went on for months before Land Rover on the 1st March admitted taht there were problems. We were offered two bottles of cheap wine in compensation for all the misery and heart ache suffered.

I have had my Series 2 Disco (2001) TD5 for a few years now. It has been faultless, strong perfomer. Best ever Off road vehicle I have owned (6 in total). I sold a 2003 Prado to get back into a Landy. It's my third with the marquee and I am over the b/s everyone claims that L/Rovers are trouble......most of these people have never ever owned one, so how can they comment? It's like an urban myth, or Urbane myth! D4 is the next for me.

I cannot stress enough how they are still having issue on reliability. I have a Disco 4 and te boot does nt open and basic lights inside have faults, does not sound bad ut after spending over 40,000 on a new car you have some basic expectations!! Do not get one, unless you can agree a service pack included.

Land Rover were one of the best for the rental car company I worked for in the UK. Loads of courtesy car rentals on the Land Rover account, though close to half were Freelander owners, which became a bit of a running joke around the office.

Also Mercedes Benz Gatwick generated a lot of business for us,though I hear Merc are ironing out many of the issues they had in the past.

Well if they have improved the cars reliability over the past 7 years it would be worth driving, these are one of the best looking 4x4's on the planet, but reliability issues in the past have put me off owning one until they sort it out.
