Skoda Snowman SUV production to begin in late 2015 – report

A mid-size Skoda SUV will reportedly enter production late next year before reaching global showrooms in 2016.

Czech media claims the new model – which is reportedly  dubbed the Skoda Snowman – will be built at the brand’s production plant in Kvasiny, Czech Republic, where the brand currently builds the Roomster, Yeti and Superb.

Reuters quotes a Skoda union leader, who says a decision on the new SUV’s production location will be made on Friday when Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn meets with company executives.

A Seat plant in Spain has also been under consideration to host production, with the Skoda set to be twinned with a model from its Spanish sister brand, though production costs in the Czech Republic are significantly lower than those in Spain.

The Skoda Snowman is understood to be closely related to Volkswagen’s forthcoming CrossBlue concept-inspired SUV, which is set to launch in left-hand-drive markets next year.

A size larger than the Volkswagen Tiguan, Skoda’s version is expected to be available in five- and seven-seat layouts and with front- and four-wheel-drive underpinnings. It will be based on the MQB platform, shared with the Skoda Octavia, Volkswagen Golf, Audi A3, and other Volkswagen Group models.

Skoda’s SUV will take inspiration from the brand’s evolving design language, seen most recently in the swoopy VisionC concept, while the Seat will borrow cues from the IBX concept of 2011.
