The introduction of the two companies came through an association with the Carlton Football Club. Hyundai is a major sponsor of the club and Zac Fried, Spotlight Group’s joint owner and director is on the football club’s board.

“Spotlight Group was looking to renew our sales force vehicles and the Hyundai Tucson performed extremely well in all aspects of our evaluation” said Zac Fried. “These vehicles will be used by our sales force for customer and in house visits, so it is imperative we have reliable, fuel efficient vehicles whilst still being able to optimise space to carry products and tools”.

The Hyundai Tucson City SX compact SUV offers Spotlight Group reduced CO2 emissions and enhanced safety features such as ESP Stability Control technology and airbags, without compromising operational requirements.

“We were introduced to Spotlight Group through our connection at Carlton Football Club” Hyundai’s Director of Sales and Marketing, Kevin McCann commented. “Spotlight Group was looking for a suitable vehicle to fulfil a particular business need and we are delighted that the Hyundai Tucson compact SUV meets all their criteria.”

  1. The Salesman says:

And so it begins. Hyundai – Kia offer the cheapest vehicles with the lowest carbon foot print. The perfect combination for big fleet deals when it comes to off setting carbon emissions.

  2. Bavarian Missile says:

We already knew they were in the Spotlight for all their recent accomplishments .

Sorry couldnt help myself Salesy ;)………

Im thinking someones been b a n n e d ,been quiet on here for 2 days ,great isnt it! Now arguments woohoo

  3. smokin'R32 says:

    Slow news day eh?

  4. RoFlmaTiC says:

    Agreed Smokin’R32

  5. The Salesman says:

This is extremely significant news. Australian auto industry faces complete annihilation in fleet (except Toyota hybrid) unless they come up with better carbon emissions. With tax breaks for companies that buy cars with 4.5 stars (Australian Green Vehicle Guide) or better and emissions trading, fleet purchases have a lot of incentive to “Go Green”. Have a look on the site, not one Holden or Ford makes it into the top 20. Toyota currently have three, Hyundai has one, Kia will have two with the introduction of the new Soul, Fiat have three, VW has one, Audi has two Mercedes have three and so on. Holden and Ford think it is bad for them now, just wait until the global credit crunch is a distant memory. And BM, just in case you miss him. They should have bught Lexus :)

  6. Bret says:

So the local on-road sales rep will lose her old model lancer wagon for this? I would like to see the emission/fuel usage comparison for the two.

  7. The Salesman says:

    Bret,
Hyundai – Kia have an engine development alliance with Mitsubishi – Chrysler. I bet the difference (if any) is negligible.

  8. Adam says:

Love the irony that this is about the Carlton footy club and the big sign in the photo says ‘Hyundai Essendon’

    lol.

  9. Bret says:

BM what do you mean? Only one person Danned?
But there are sooo many names missing…..

Seriously though, that bloke was also using other frequnt posters names to invent and carry on arguments all on his own.

  10. Andrew M says:

    Salesman,
Dont drum up the “Green” thingy, these chew more fuel than a commodore or falcon.

The reason these were bought was because they got a good deal on them.
the owner of the footy club has bought these to keep the club sponsor happy.
how is hyundai gonna pull their sponsorship now that the club owner has just bought a stack of their cars???

  11. Andrew M,
    Fuel Consumption Combined (Highway-City)
    Commodore Omega 10.6
    Hyundai Tucson 8.0

Green House rating out of 10
    Commodore Omega 5
    Hyundai Tucson 6.5

And that’s before you look at ownerhip costs.
    Purchase price
    Servicing
    Registration
    Insurance
    Tyres

And when they on sell them the auction house wont have 4,000 waiting to be sold (Unlike Commodore) so resale possibly better to.

I can see a lot more reasons other than sponsorship

  12. JML says:

Why is this news? Fleet deals like this happen every day.

  13. Hummerbug says:

JML- Refer a few comments back SmokinR32?

  14. Bret says:

    Salesman,
Nice comparison, if they currently drove Commodores.

However the real comparison is not so cut’n dried:

    Lancer wagon:
    auto 8.9 l/100km & 211g/km, man 9.5 l/100km & 226g/km

    Tucson City:
    auto 8.0 l/100km & 190g/km, man 9.2 l/100km & 236g/km

So the smaller engined Tucsan is only slighty better, but hey, that’s marketing.

  15. Bla bla , dans on hols he will be back

  16. Andrew M says:

    Salesman,
well my source must be dodge.
I found the tuscon at 11L but then realised it was the upper spec.
I went and checked again and this particular model in auto is displayed at 9.9L

I also found the green house rating to be 5.5

    better resale than a commodore????
last time i checked hyundai resale is one of the worst.
have you seen resale on a once 20K Getz???
I also got a Hyundai in my other driveway which im looking at getting rid of, unfortunately also worth nothing

either way resale certainly aint any better

I think you will also find commodore and falcon tyres to be cheaper than 4wd tyres (which this wears) and dime a dozen parts can be said for falcons and commys, whereas the scarce amount of these vehicles on our roads means the opposite.
Also servicing 4wd’s is also more expensive.

  17. Bret says:

Andrew you do realise that the Tucson “City” is only FWD?
But agree on the tyres/servicing etc anyway.

And most of the Spotlight mobile service cars were 4cyl Jap cars anyway. The most common probably being Lancer wagons.

  18. Andrew M says:

    Ah ha,
    Thanks Bret,
Thats what happens when you do a quick search for a couple of figures.

I see where I became mistaken on the 4×4 issue.
When i did a quick one to find the fuel figure I pulled up the 4X4 model Tuscon (11L/100k)

Then when i went back i pulled up the Tuscon city FWD, which was the one i reported as 9.9L/100k.

I assumed you could also get the lower spec City in 4X4 aswell, unfortunately not the case, my error.

but even in light of those corrections my sentiments still remain the same.

I think its silly to say this vehicle was chosen for green credentials or servicing costs let alone resale.

Im sure a windscreen and oil filter for a falcon would be a fraction of what the same parts for this would be

  19. Samboy says:

    Slow news day indeed.

In other news, my boss just bought three BT-50 utes.

  20. Mick says:

It would be interesting to see spotlight’s running costs for these things vs smaller cars after a year or so. I would imagine they will struggle to be cheaper.
Sponsorship money is a wonderful thing isn’t it.

Damn not banned! Should be though.

Samboy glad to hear your boss bought 3 BT-50’s, hope they are happy with them!

  21. skystar airport services AUSTRALIA NOW TOLL DNATA says:

A Brilliant idea, maybve i should get my freinds at Perth airport to drive these around, But i dont work there anymore since Jim Montgomory got rid of me, I am still waiting for Lloyd Port-Lewis to meet me in the staff carpark at perth International Airport. Back to cars, I think Customs are going to do the same thing with their cars. I told Jim he cant fire me I quit. best thing i e3ver did.

  22. Andrew says:

Yes, smokinR32, quite literally a slow news day. These things are zippy to about 60-70km/h but ask one to overtake? Think again. The first time I had to pull in behind someone I tried to overtake was in a Tucson City, there was miles of room and the other car was only going about 70km/h!!

  23. Andrew says:

And I agree with you Andrew M that it is a silly vehicle to be chosen on green credentials alone. Surely it would make more sense if they bought i30 CW’s?

  24. Frontman says:

ha ha ha the salesman makes reference to the over supply of used Comodores when time comes to trade in, how does something with a (publically percieved) poor long term reliability reputation go with resale after they go out and get all the fleets and hit the market at the same time???? Remember resale is a supply demand issue

  25. The Salesman says:

    Andrew M,
So what car does have good re sale value? I have never done a valuation and had a customer say
“Are you sure? That sounds like too much; i am willing to accept less if you like”
A V6 anything is difficult to sell new let alone used. Four cylinder cars are still selling well (Check Mazda 3 out selling Commodore in the last few months) Thus the “Green” statement by me. As i said also less insurance and registration. Check Australian Green Vehicle Guide for my source on fuel consumption.

  26. The Salesman says:

    Frontman,
You know i could write a book just based on the used car market and perceived value of trades. I am only referring to what markets are popular now. All cars loose value, you know that. But if you want to reduce your loss you need to look at the up front cost and cost of ownership. Why am i preaching to the quire?

  27. Dlr1 says:

well i guess this story just reinforces my view that these cars are the darlings of the haberdashery and craft set. yawn.

  28. Andrew M says:

    T/S,
you just reiterated what i said in terms of resale.

first you claimed that that these would have better resale, and then said nothing has resale…..

I acknowledge that resale on 6cyl models is typiclly not too good at the moment, but as i said, since when has Hyundai resale ever been any good???
Its certainly no better than Holden or Ford Resale.

Oh and if you want to know what does have resale, apparently F-Trucks do, and as i recently found out Mazda3’s fair bloody well against their competition aswell.

    Saving on upfront purchase???
what are these worth??? Around the 30K mark???
Would get into a massive array of Mitsubishis for that price too

    Come on Admitt it,
this is a keep the sponsor happy deal

  29. The Salesman says:

    Andrew M says,
“First you claimed that that these would have better resale”

Actually first I said their would be many rewards for going “Green” with new fleet purchases. Go back and read again on re sale. I said
“And when they on sell them the auction house wont have 4,000 waiting to be sold (Unlike Commodore) so resale possibly better to. I can see a lot more reasons other than sponsorship

    Andrew M Says
“And then said nothing has resale”…..

Again, this is what I said on re sale.
I am only referring to what markets are popular now. All cars loose value, you know that. But if you want to reduce your loss you need to look at the up front cost and cost of ownership.

    Andrew M says
    “Saving on upfront purchase???
what are these worth??? Around the 30K mark???

The retail price for a Hyundai Tucson is $21,990.00 drive away I am positive they would have paid less than the current retail drive away price. A far cry form $30k.

    Andrew M Says
    “Come on Admit it,
this is a keep the sponsor happy deal”

Andrew I never said it wasn’t, I did say there is a lot of other reasons other than sponsorship agreements.

  30. Andrew M says:

22K driveaway, well lets compare retail prices cause everyone is dipping below list price with out negotiating at the moment. Whats the list price on road???
    its gotta be around 30K

Fair enough you never actually “claimed” better resale (i suppose i got a little carried away) but you put forward an assumption that they did.
All I pointed out in reply was that even with out 4000 Hyundais sitting at auction houses, their resale history is still shot.

Oh yeah and the going green thing,
these arent any greener than the current Lancers they were using.
Is this car on the top whatever green list??
