How not to: Install a satnav

By Karl Peskett |

Well, it’s Friday, and the wierd ones are starting to come across our desks.

There’s professional installations, and then there’s this. One of our intrepid CarAdvice readers has sent us a pearler in this lesson on how not to install your suction-cap mounted satellite navigation system.

Okay so your suction cap doesn’t work properly. Then why not buy a new one? Because you can get a piece of right-angle iron, stuff it in your dash, and you get the same result – that’s why.

Worryingly, this is in a brand new FG Falcon. More worryingly, this is in a roadside assistance vehicle.

If this is the level of care that this company takes to get your vehicle back on the road, I’ll get out and push, thanks.

  • Bavarian Missile

    hahaha ,thats rough as guts………

  • WVB

    so is the toggle switch

  • Mick

Got to love the Aussie spirit of… she’ll be right!!

Makes any backyard mechanic proud. This bloke probably chopped the springs on their VL to lower it as well!

  • Hummerbug

Lets hope this bozo’s airbag works if they hit someone or else theyll be skewered like a shishkabab! Spot on Mick She’ll be right haaaaa

  • Bavarian Missile

hahaha,”This bloke probably chopped the springs on their VL to lower it as well! “”

hell no Mick……….. heat them up with the Oxy…..

  • RALLYX

Is this a joke? April fools was 3 days ago.

That’s right Hummerbug, should make a great safety device in a head-on.

  • Name (required)

bahahahahahaha see that supercheap auto add is right let them install it this is wat happns wen u do sumthn ur self bahahaha
but how can some one stuff somthng so easy up

  • Frontman

On the Defensive………… Ford Motor company does not run it’s own roadside assist group so their part in this was to rather unfortunately sell this git a car….. :-(

  • Zorro

What’s wrong with cutting springs or putting the oxy on ‘em? Improved the ride on my VE Commodore…..

Right, now I’ll get to work on my new rear wing, just gotta get hold of some 2nd hand tupperware…

  • Hummerbug

Zorro said “Right, now I’ll get to work on my new rear wing, just gotta get hold of some 2nd hand tupperware… ” I thought Tupperware was Toyota spare parts?? LOL

  • Bavarian Missile

hahaha and when ya finished that project Zorro ,Ive got a Kmart sunroof with a big eagle on it for you to fit,now do you need an angle grinder with that ……….he he he

  • Hummerbug

Nah BM Toyota have come along way since angle grinders its all snap lock nowadays haaaa

  • crouchy

So this is what happens when you start ticking the options boxes for your new FG Falcon……

  • Zorro

Sunroof sounds good to me BM, and the angle grinder will be quicker than my tin snips too. I have the Smokey & The Bandit style eagle for the bonnet as well..

But I’m saving the best till last – the shaker I’m going to make out of a milo tin, oh yeah pimp my ride!!

  • Bavarian Missile

hahaha Zorro, that would be a laughing chicken for the bonnet…….sweet !

Nah stuff the milo tin a couple of pizza boxes wrapped in al foil will look a treat……daaadaaaaa, hornet scoop.

  • Wheelnut

You could only imagine how this guy would install/fit a reversing camera….
he’d probably use a Sony handy-cam which is held on to the towbar with a G-Clamp.. and the the monitor would be an old 10cm B&W portable TV from Tandy mounted to the roof with Duct Tape

  • Andrew M

The RSPCA will take animals off of you if you mistreat them, and the child services will take Kids off of you if you mistreat them,
why on earth does this guy deserve to drive a brand spanking car???
Everyone knows its much easier to jamb the angle in the CD slot rather than pry open the dash….

  • Frenchie

He’s probably already though, “With that extra angle iron I could add a extra cup holder onto it”.

  • .

    Nice

  • Wheelnut

I wonder what the Toggle switch [first photo; just below the instrument cluster] does

  • Phill

What a dick.Could the cops defect this car???

  • Wheelnut

Phill – The cops can issue a defect notice as the sharp edges/corners on the angle iron are an obvious safety risk to peoples hand or heads. Not only that but the sat nav could break off and become a loose projectile within the cabin or the RTA could defect it if they believe it inhibits the drivers view

  • Phill

Wheelnut – I thought that might be the case and to think, this is a roadside assistance vehicle.Maybe he’s roadside assistance for box trailers and horse floats.HaHa

  • Phill

Wheetnut – What if were not giving this guy credit were credits due, what if with one flick of the toogle switch, the whole thing folds neatly, back under the dash, back to a factory look, imagine what his box trailer does.

  • Cupid Stunt

Just imagine the injury if he crashed. Lethal but sadly amusing

  • realcars

Obviously a company car.Hope they sack the idiot.

  • Yanzo

wtf man… doesn’t it already have a sat nav. how the f**k did he afford to by the damn car?

  • Tony

he needs to put a yellow plastic star picket cap on it like it’s mandated by workcover

  • riceboy

this guy deserves a Darwin Award!… or do the awards only go to him if he’s shish kebabed in a crash?

  • MisterTwo

As this is a Roadside Assistance vehicle I imagine the toggle switch is for the orange beacons on the roof.

  • Rough as Guts

Holy Cow, this guys is Nuts!?!?! Fancy a bit on angle iron in the skull under heaving breaking? haha
