I suppose to start with I will just reaffirm many of the previous points that really the Corolla is not designed for enthauiasts. Really, if you look at it from the POV of a person who just wants a car for practical purposes its hard to do better. I presently have a 5-speed '97 Toyota Starlet and its just such a pleasant little car (though I am glad its not a Auto). My car is a good example of just how established and finessed Toyota has the basic engineering of a automobile down to. Admiteddly it is my first car so perhaps my judgement is a bit clowded by the light feel of the pedals and the light-direct feel of the gearshift and after being in some rather modern Commodores and a Camry it feels a little non-soundproofed (afterall it was Toyota's answer to the korean invasion). The idea of many of small Toyota's drivers being older people who care more about boring stuff than the interesting stuff is a bit offputting perhaps for a future purchase, the mechanical integrity is sound and therefore should be treated as accomplished overall if a little understated.

I currently own a 1991 twin cam corolla hatchback which I love but which is showing signs of wear so I thought I would test drive the current 2007 model. I tried the sedan which although it would be a bit different from the hatch - not overwhelmingly so I would presume.

The new model is horrible. No rear visibility - I had to use the mirrors and felt really unsafe. The side windows are also really narrow and high from the ground. I really dislike convex side mirrors - I want to see things in proper perspective thank you. No amount of adjusting the seat could get it in the right position in relation to the pedals and I ended up with a really sore back.

The 6 gears are an awful concept and make it difficult to drive as the gears have short ratios and you have to keep changing. I also don't like the pull up ring for reverse and the position of the reverse. The clutch was pretty poxy as well.

It doesn't sit well on the road. I have never liked the fact that my 1991 corolla tends to wander all over the road unless you keep steering it - The current model is not a lot better. Also the styling on both hatch and sedan is not that great. The hatch also has a 'bridge' where the allegedly ergonomically placed gear stick is. How long will it be before it is grotty and disgusting in the space underneath this bridge?

I test drove the mazda 3 and that was a nice car. Again a couple of issues with rear visibility but I need to check that out again on another test drive. But what easy car to drive that was and it also looked good inside and out. The mazda 6 looked even better but out of my price range.

My 1991 corolla is a comfy luxurious car with fantastic visibility and drives along nice and smoothly (apart from the wandering on the road problem). It also has a really nice shape at the back. I want a new one of those not the cheap rubbish the current one is. I am a bit strapped for cash at present and may well just go ahead and get my current car fixed up so it will go for another couple of years until I have some money to buy a new mazda.

Thanks guys thats an hour of my life I will never get back....ironically all manufacturers have there pro's and cons...I have owned fiats and found them great other than the electrical and rust problems
I have owned Gm and Ford products and know the spare parts guys real well
I have owned japanese and korean cars and if all you want is reliable lack lustre motoring thats the way to go.
So basically you get what you pay for and no vehicle does everything perfectly especially when cost is factored in.
European cars break down too just more embarassing.
How about we try something unique and discuss from a values point of view...no flag waving required, I for one enjoy hearing of the good and bad so I can make an informed decision as I am in the market for a car myself.

regards John K

The most powerful letter in the automotive world, "M"!! Sweet car. I had a 'poor mans' M3 in E36 guise in the shape of a 325i coupe with "M-Tech" suspension. Best car I have owned with handling that was truly sublime. Unfortunately had to get rid of it when I got married as my wife couldn't drive manuals :-(.

When I was in the BMW club QLD one of the members made most of us jealous. He had an E36 M3 SMG, a brand new E39 M5 with custom exhaust (sounded amazing pulling 7000rpm+ down the front straight of Lakeside) and at the time had placed an order for the E46 M3 just before release in Aus. What was even more amazing was that he still planned to keep the other 2!!!! I would love that garage.
