2009 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG early look
April 1, 2009 by George Skentzos
The press embargo on the stunning new Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG has been broken in the lead up to the car’s official unveiling at the New York Auto Show, giving us an early look at this amazing machine.
The potent performance flagship of the recently released new generation E-Class range borrows many advanced technologies and components from its SL63 AMG Roadster sibling, including the AMG 6.3-litre V8-engine.
This powerplant develops 386kW and 630Nm, putting it on par with the SL63 AMG Roadster and well clear of its little brother, the C63 AMG – incorporating a newly designed water cooling system to ensures maximum endurance even under the enormous dynamic stresses of the racetrack.
The engine is mated to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed sports transmission which features four driving modes: ‘C’ Controlled Efficiency, ‘S’ Sport, ‘S+’ Sport plus and ‘M’ Manual.
In Controlled Efficiency mode, the transmission has been calibrated to perform early upshifts to keep engine speeds as low as possible.
In the more demanding Manual mode, the transmission can perform rev-matched shifts in just 100 milliseconds and features a RACE START function to call on the maximum acceleration potential automatically.
As this press release was intended for the North American market, the performance figures for the E63 AMG are quoted in imperial units – accelerating from zero to 60mph in 4.4 seconds which puts it roughly on par with the C63 AMG.
Adding to the capability of the E63 AMG’s split personality – luxury and performance – it also boasts an electronically controlled damping system with three settings: Comfort, Sport and Sport plus, which copes equally well with the racetrack as it does the road.
A unique, newly developed front axle provides more grip when taking turns at speed, already proving its worth in the C63 AMG, while more negative camber has been dialled in at the rear for greater stability.
The 3-stage ESP from the SL63 AMG and C63 AMG has also been carried over, which provides three modes to act as an electronic safety net – complimenting skilled drivers and keeping the less experienced out of harm’s way.
The simply stunning form of the E-Class sedan has been maintained whilst adding a touch of aggression, with wider fenders, a new AMG front with larger air intakes and daytime LED running lights, AMG side skirts and AMG rear apron with a black diffuser insert.
Inside, the AMG variant adds electrically adjustable AMG sports seats, AMG sports steering wheel in a four-spoke design with AMG shift paddles, high-grade leather upholstery, AMG instrument cluster with an AMG main menu, door entry sills with AMG lettering and a sports pedal cluster.
The new Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG will make its US sales debut in November 2009 with Australian availability yet to be announced.

I’m not really into Mercedes-Benz’s, but I quite like the look of this.
Oooooooooo i lik alot!
Looks like a lexus
I love how Mercedes have found that balance between elegance and aggression in their AMG range. Like the C63, the E63 has oodles of aggression, yet, comes across as unassuming and understated. The new E63 is an amazing looking machine.
Really? It looks like the front end of a lexus welded to the back of a 1996 camry to me. Awful.
Man, that looks hawt!! Stunning looking car!
Gotta agree with Matt though. The front, especially the headlights, looks like they came from the Lexus GS. Looking at the rear, the slanted tail lights and all look like IS.
the new e class has really grown on me now and i rather like it
I really like.
I totally agree with Damian. They look stunning and prestige but can mix it with the best of them if needs be.
sorry CA, i meant ‘chromed up crap’ =]
i like the new e-klasse, only with larger wheels though (not chromed up crap, but larger merc wheels (19″)).
kings of leon wrote ’s e x on fire’
mercedes benz have made ’s e x on wheels’
=]
PHWOOOOAR!!!! THIS THING IS THE HOTTEST CAR THIS SIDE OF AN ASTON!!!
Alex, there’s already an Alex.
Hmmm, I don’t like the new E Class. I thought that they would make the next one more interesting and sporty looking but instead they’ve just gone from a rounded car to a squared off one. I’m not saying it looks bad but in a world where BMW will have the next 5 Series out in a couple of years (and that will probably be top of the class again) and the Jaguar XF is currently best in class, they could have been a bit more daring.
I’ve seen so many reviews for the new E Class and not one has called it best in class and I think that’s saying something.
Alex Alex Axel – awww whatever
Supposed to be about the AMG63 version but hey
Fronts a Lexus rears a Hynudai. Still will sell to taxi drivers in stuttgart by the shipload.
Kinda like it but being an Audiphile mines the A6 still
Sorry I agree with the Original Alex…………..oh and it still looks like a pensioners car .
I’ll take an audi rs6 any day over this old man’s car.
The new generation Merc interiors SUCK! I also would take the AUDI
The interior in this one is a bit of a mess I gotta admit.
It looks a bit sharpy for me. The 2006 model looks sleeker.
Yeah, I would take the Audi too. Of course I would have an M5 before that and an XFR before that.
Mercedes interiors are always a mess on the higher up models. The A Class and C Class have good clean interiors but the SL has a horrible interior. Good quality, but it looks bad. At least they finally got rid of that steering wheel with all the bulges coming off it. The only high up Mercedes that do have nice interiors are the S Class and the CL Class.
I think the XF has the best in class interior. It’s clean and good quality without being boring. The Audi is excellent quality but so plain.
Here on the estate this war machine would be most welcome , oh gosh what do i give up , the bentley or the aston , such grunt , regards to all the alexanders out there .
I prefer alex to the ” original alex ‘, who i suspect is just a just a interior car detailer , seems obsessed with bloody steering wheels , who cares its all about GRUNT , this a war machine .
Well, I’m not an interior car detailer. But if you’re more interested in hearing about power, well, everybody says the RS6 has too much. I know it sounds silly and I won’t believe the term too much power until the day I drive it but in a world where everybody says the M5 is almost perfect, I would have to have that.
And for the record, the other Alex’s first comment was about how it looked. Oh listen to me, all jealous.
just give the RS6 to mtm and let them do their magic IE: 720bhp and nothing with boot will come close, and who said 580bhp was too much haha.
