Citroen Grand C4 Picasso : Pricing and specifications

Family car Francophiles, préparer à s'énerver - the new Citroen Grand C4 Picasso has gone on sale in Australia priced from $43,990.

The all-new seven-seat model is only available in one trim level – Citroen Grand C4 Picasso Exclusive – and there’s just one drivetrain option available, an efficient diesel unit teamed to a standard automatic transmission. It’s $4500 dearer than the car it replaces, but Citroen claims there is $9000 worth of extra value to the consumer.

That equipment list is extensive (see below), and Citroen says it is aimed at making daily duties less tedious for busy parents – items such as satellite navigation, automated parking, a surround view camera, blind spot monitoring being its main points of difference. Safety-conscious buyers who wish to use those rearmost seats may wish to note, however, that curtain airbag protection only extends to the second row, while there are also dual front and front-side airbags.

The Grand C4 Picasso’s powerplant is a new-generation 2.0-litre turbo diesel four-cylinder producing 110kW of power at 4000rpm and 370Nm of torque between 2000-2500rpm, with stop-start technology and a fuel use claim of 4.5L/100km. The engine sends its power to the front wheels via a newly developed six-speed automatic transmission – no manual will be offered.

The new model is the first Citroen to be offered in Australia built on the Peugeot Citroen Group’s new EMP2 modular underpinnings. That platform helps the new Grand C4 Picasso drop 100 kilograms compared to its predecessor (now 1440kg), and while it is the same length as the car it replaces (4600 millimetres long, 1826mm wide and 1644mm tall), the wheelbase has been stretched to 2840mm, up 110mm over the old version.

The car is also the first of Citroen’s C-range models sold here with the – dare we say it – quirky French brand’s new styling language. As will be seen on all C-range models in the coming years, the Grand C4 Picasso features bold front-end styling with twin level headlights, and Australian-delivered cars have the brand’s 3D-look LED tail-light inlays as standard.

While the rival Honda Odyssey has moved to a sliding door layout, the Citroen retains its classic five-door wagon body with swinging rear doors, and there are three ISOFIX child seat anchor points in the second row. It has a 632-litre boot with the rear row stored and second row seats slid back as far as they go (or 793L with them in their forward-most setting) and 165L with the back row up.

Options available for the Grand C4 Picasso include 18-inch alloy wheels ($1500), an electronic operating tailgate ($1000), and adaptive bi-xenon headlights ($2000). Metallic paint - which must be optioned on seven of the eight hue choices - costs $800.

There’s also a Drive Assist pack with lane departure warning, auto high-beam lights, radar cruise control, anti-collision warning and seatbelt pre-tensioners – it costs $2000.

Other bundles include the Lounge Pack with part-leather seats ($2500), which adds “relax-style” headrests in the front two rows, second row tray tables with LED lighting, front seats with electric lumbar adjustment and massage function, and an electric ottoman style footrest for the front passenger seat. The Lounge Pack can also be had with all of the above and Nappa full-leather seats, electric front seat adjustment and heated front seats with some interior trim changes ($5000).

Citroen doesn't offer a capped price servicing program for its C-range models, though the DS line is offered with that peace of mind as standard. When it comes to warranty coverage, Citroen will make an announcement regarding its warranty program for the Grand C4 Picasso and some other models on March 1 - stay tuned for that.
