The new $81,900 Audi RS Q3 is the first ever RS model sold here under $100,000, and the first ever RS-badged SUV.
It comes with a 2.5-litre turbocharged five-cylinder petrol engine producing 228kW of power between 5200-6700rpm, and 420Nm of torque at 1500-5200rpm. Fuel use is rated at 8.8L/100km, and it boasts a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 5.2 seconds. Getting the power to the ground via all four wheels is a seven-speed dual-clutch S tronic transmission.
Optional packages available for the RS Q3 include the RS performance package ($5250) which adds sports seats with nappa leather and diamond stitching, interior carbon fibre inlays, a 14-speaker Bose stereo with digital radio reception, red brake calipers and 20-inch alloys.
The assistance package ($2490) includes lane-keeping and blind spot assistance, adaptive headlights, auto high beam and hill descent and hill hold assistance. Two $1300 styling packs are available: the black high-gloss and the matte aluminium styling packages add interior and exterior trim highlights.
There are seven colour choices, six of which use metallic paint ($1495). Other options include tinted glass ($910), a panoramic sunroof ($3250), and heated front seats ($780).
Audi Australia is forecasting sales of about 100 units per year, about 3.0 per cent of the number of Q3s it is expected to sell in 2014.
