Volvo S60: 478kW V8 Supercars contender revealed

The Volvo S60 V8 Supercar has debuted in Sydney, revealing a 478kW 5.0-litre V8-powered racer that will take to the grid later this month for the start of the 2014 V8 Supercars season.

Making its mark early this morning by driving across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Valvoline-liveried Volvo S60 V8 Supercar has been designed and built to V8 Supercars' 'Car of the Future' regulations and features a six-speed sequential transaxle gearbox, independent rear suspension and 18-inch wheels.

A circa-478kW Polestar-built 5.0-litre V8 engine – based on the brand’s Yamaha-developed 4.4-litre ‘B8444S’ V8 last seen in 2011 – powers the S60 racer, and features an 60-degree vee configuration and a 7500rpm redline.

Volvo claims the aluminium unit propels its S60 Supercar to 100km/h in 3.2 seconds and on to a top speed in excess of 298km/h.

Claiming to be the first factory-backed luxury car manufacturer to compete in V8 Supercars – the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG-based racer that joined the series in 2013 is run by Erebus Motorsport and is not supported by the German car maker – Volvo Car Australia managing director Matt Braid said it was “an historic day” for the Swedish marque.

“We're delighted to reveal our Volvo S60 race car to meet the challenge of the world's toughest touring car series and strengthen the presence of the S60 model line – and Volvo brand – here in Australia," Braid said.

Volvo's global performance and motorsport partner since 1996, Polestar will join team principal Garry Rogers and drivers Scott McLaughlin and Robert Dahlgren in tackling Round One of the 2014 V8 Supercars series in Adelaide on February 27. This will follow an official testing day at Sydney Motorsport Park on February 15.

No stranger to local touring car racing, Volvo’s involvement in Australian motorsport dates back to the 1960s and includes winning the 1986 Australian Touring Car Championship with Robbie Francevic in a Volvo 240T and claiming top spot at the 1998 Bathurst 1000 with Jim Richards and Rickard Rydell in a Volvo S40.
