Toyota Camry Hybrid : sports variant in the works

A sports version of the Toyota Camry Hybrid will launch in the US in the coming months as the brand looks to broaden the appeal of its popular mid-size sedan.

Toyota USA senior vice president Bob Carter told Bloomberg the new sports hybrid variant was a direct response to customer demands for a Camry combining the efficiency of the regular petrol-electric model with sportier styling.

“We’re going to introduce a couple of special editions in the spring and one of them will be a sport hybrid,” Carter told reporters at the Chicago auto show.

It’s unclear at this stage if the Camry Sports Hybrid will get a boost over the 151kW of the regular car’s 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and electric motor powertrain.

The Toyota Camry Hybrid (pictured above) was the top-selling hybrid sedan in the US last year, holding off the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Energi plug-in (44,448 versus 43,359), while the Camry (pictured top) was the highest-selling passenger car overall in 2013 with 408,484 sales, beating the newer Honda Accord by more than 40,000 units.

CarAdvice has contacted Toyota Australia about its interest in the Camry Sport Hybrid and the potential for a right-hand-drive version to be produced locally for our market.
