BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe : four-door hatchback revealed
The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is the latest addition to the all-new model's line-up, combining a set of rear doors and a hatchback rear end with its two-door sibling's sleek lines.
Inspired by the larger 6 Series Gran Coupe, and a rival for the Audi A5 Sportback, the five-seat four-door 4 Series will follow on from the 4 Series Coupe and Convertible when it arrives on local shores in June.
Measuring 4638mm long, 1825mm wide and riding on a 2810mm wheelbase, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe shares identical dimensions to the two-door – both also feature a 1545mm front and 1594mm rear track.
The figures make BMW’s smallest Gran Coupe 14mm longer and wider than the 3 Series sedan, though at 1389mm, its height is 40mm less than the 3 Series and 12mm more than the 4 Series Coupe. BMW says the extra height results in more interior headroom and comfort.
Accessible via a hatchback-style boot lid, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe offers 480 litres of boot capacity – up 35L on the Coupe and matching the 3 Series sedan – with 40:20:40 split-fold seat backs increasing maximum volume to 1300L.
Coming as standard with an automatic opening and closing boot mechanism, a ‘Smart Opener’ feature can be ordered allowing the hatch to opened and closed by moving a foot under the rear bumper.
The 4 Series Gran Coupe carries over the current 3 and 4 Series engines and includes the petrol-powered 225kW/400Nm 435i, 180kW/350Nm 428i and 135kW/270Nm 420i. Diesel units include the 135kW/380Nm 420d and 105kW/320Nm 418d, delivering claimed fuel consumption bests of 4.7 and 4.5 litres per 100km respectively.
A six-speed manual transmission is again standard, with all engines able to be teamed with an optional eight-speed Steptronic or eight-speed sport Steptronic transmission. All transmissions feature automatic stop-start, with the sport Steptronic gearbox offering ‘Normal’ and ‘Sport’ driving modes.
Weighing up to 60kg more than Coupe, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe range comes with some increases in performance and efficiency figures compared with its two-door kin.
The flagship 435i Gran Coupe claims 8.1L/100km, 189 grams of CO2 per kilometre and a 0-100km/h of 5.5sec (manual) and 5.2sec (auto) – up 0.2L/100km, 4g/km and 0.1 second.
Claiming 6.6L/100km, 154g/km and a 6.1-sec 0-100km/h, the 428i Gran Coupe matches the regular Coupe, while the 420i claims 6.4L/100km, 149g/km and a 0-100km/h of 7.5sec (7.6 auto).
From its European launch, BMW will optionally offer the 428i and 420d Gran Coupes with its xDrive all-wheel-drive technology before later releasing a 230kW/630Nm 435d xDrive variant and a 190kW/560Nm 430d Gran Coupe. The German car maker will also make xDrive optionally available on 435i and 420i Gran Coupes later in 2014.
Set to make its public debut at next month's Geneva motor show, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe is due to arrive on local shores in June/July with a range largely expected to mirror the Coupe and pricing tipped to sit between the two-door, which starts at $69,500, and the $88,800 drop-top due in March.
