Volkswagen Golf R Evo : 275kW concept tipped for Beijing debut

An extreme hot-hatch dubbed the Volkswagen Golf R Evo is expected to preview future high-performance powertrain and construction technologies from the German manufacturer at April's Beijing motor show.

Autocar reports the Golf R Evo concept will be powered by a significantly uprated version of the production car’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Outputs are tipped to rise from the standard 221kW of power (detuned to 206kW for Australia) and 380Nm of torque to closer to 275kW and 450Nm.

The tuning of the enhanced powerplant has reportedly been overseen by Volkswagen engine development chief Fritz Eichlerh – the man behind the 265kW/450Nm 2.0-litre turbo in Mercedes-Benz’s A45, CLA45 and GLA45 AMG trio.

Like the regular Mk7 Golf R, power will be channelled to all four wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Carbonfibre body panels and a stripped-out interior are said to cut the Volkswagen Golf R Evo’s kerb weight from the standard car’s 1476kg to below 1400kg.

If the reports are accurate, the Golf R Evo will debut just 11 months after the car maker teased hot-hatch enthusiasts with the twin-turbocharged 370kW/560Nm 3.0-litre V6-powered Volkswagen Golf GTI Design Vision concept (pictured top).

Autocar also reports Volkswagen is readying a high-performance Polo R pocket rocket, which it believes could debut as early as March’s Geneva motor show.

Allegedly twinned with the upcoming Audi S1, the UK publication claims the Polo R will team a 186kW 2.0-litre turbo with a six-speed DSG and all-wheel drive in a package capable of sprinting to triple figures in less than six seconds.

Volkswagen’s city car range is currently topped by the twin-charged 132kW/250Nm 1.4-litre Polo GTI, which hits 100km/h from rest in 6.9 seconds.
