Hyundai unveils BLUE-WILL hybrid concept

March 26, 2009 by George Skentzos

Hyundai is continuing its shock and awe campaign on the automotive industry, having revealed the first official photos of its new plug-in hybrid concept car – BLUE-WILL.

Due to be unveiled at the Seoul Motor Show, BLUE-WILL will boast a host of innovative technologies designed to return excellent fuel economy and lessen its impact on the environment.

It utilizes a range of recycled materials in its construction, with PET soft drink bottles used to make the material for the headlamp bezels, while some interior plastics and the engine cover have been forged from materials derived from plant extracts rather than fossil fuels and are bio-degradable.

The concept is powered by an all-aluminium direct injection 1.6-litre petrol engine which is mated to a CVT transmission and a 100kw electric motor which is at the heart of Hyundai’s parallel hybrid drive architecture.

The Lithium Ion Polymer battery pack is bundled with the fuel tank underneath the rear seat to maximize luggage space, with the glass area integrating dye-sensitized solar cells which can generate power for the batteries from the sun without impeding visibility.

Hyundai will be the first automaker in the world to apply Lithium Ion Polymer in a mass production vehicle when the Elantra LPI Hybrid goes on sale in Korea in July this year.

BLUE-WILL, can we get pink jill for girls? Will it melt in the rain??

  2. JasonP says:

    Looks lik the Honda CR-X

  3. Wow, just on looks alone it kicks Honda and Toyota’s butts. I hope they have one with a Kia badge :)

Whats with the name groover ?

That looks better than Ben Cousins guns……..Lets hope Bens future is as strong as Hyundais designs !

  5. Phil says:

Can someone please remind me why Blue is the new Green? I forgot. Ta.

  6. Phil says:

Oooh, I know, I know… The salesman can sell you his soul now!

  7. Now Phil you should know that Salesmen don’t have a Soul to sell. BM. The new Kia Soul comes out next moth and I have been bitten by the Soul bug. It is such a cool car. We had Soul training yesterday in Brisbane. Me and my Soul brother (My Boss) get our Souls delivered to our showrooms today.

  8. Phil says:

Haha.. Just to be clear, I was talking about the car going on sale, not making inferences about car salesman ethics :)

  9. Frenchie says:

Not surpising that the Koreans have this technology (lith-ion) out first since they manufacture these batteries in their country.

Must of been a female that named this car. Only they give there cars names!

  10. Tim says:

LOL Hyundai copying Honda’s styling. It looks 95% like the CR-X/Insight. Enough to sue!

  11. Bret says:

Now we know where the Ssangyong stylists went to.
This is a shocker, from quite a few angles, in my opinion.

  12. Bavarian Missile (.)(.) says:

Tim if you pull back the outer edges of your eyes then maybe the Insight looks like this, other wise the Prius is a dead ringer for the Insight, perhaps Honda should sue Toyota if anyone !

    Anti spam word Hyundai………….

I love it Brett, very spacey, sort of like those cars you thought we would be driving when we were watching the Jetsons as a kid ;)

  13. Tim says:

Nah dont agree BM. This is a copy of the Insight, no questions asked. All of these hybrid cars have something in common, but this is too much of a ’similarity’. The production version of the Insight looks like crap anyway, only the fancy concept had anything going for it.

Shockingly, I think the new Prius looks great – its quite stylish and different in its own way, but thats just me. This for me though, is the lowest point for Hyundai in a few years.

  14. Bavarian Missile (.)(.) says:

mmmmmmmmmmm havent seen the concept version Tim but when I read this article on the Insight I agreed about Prius ripping the CRX off ……….

You got a link to the concept version ?

I do agree on how they all seem to have that same hybrid look, perhaps its a selling ploy ?

  15. Technofreak says:

    Blue-Will or Blue-Whale…?

  16. Tim says:

Here you go BM. Not a huge difference, but the production version lost some of the ‘aggresivness’ and funkiness found in the concept. Ofcourse, all concept > production cars are like that, but I was hoping Honda would leave it as is and not alter it too much. Oh well, Im happy driving my Subaru atm.

  17. Bavarian Missile (.)(.) says:

Thanks Tim …………..nnnnnnnnnnn yeah I see the likeness around the lights and they both still have that hatch back hybrid thingy going but I still think this concept through the doors around the boot area and over the roof are different.

Oh and my antispam word…Subaru ,spooky ! Good cars though ,like you I enjoy driving Wheelnuts Subbie!

  18. Bavarian Missile (.)(.) says:

Hey Techno………………I guess if it was a Japanese Whale not a Korean it would have a harpoon coming out of it !

  19. Dlr1 says:

i’m not too sure about those crossover creases down the sides, and the convex/concave shapes. Looks like its been in a bingle (or a bangle)

  20. Shak says:

Wait if the engine cover is biodegradeable, thenwont it break down if it gets to humid or even after a few years. Although it’s a good idea it may not last. Style is ok, and so are the limited specs, but the biodegradeable stuff……. err i dunno.

  21. Toph says:

this looks like a baleen(humpback) whale. nice theme….. blue-whale as mentioned by Technofreak. hehehe brilliant!

  22. Flying High says:

The Koreans are doing remarkable work. Sony can eat its heart out as compared to Samsung and now Toyota can probably do the same. Good work Hyundai. Not convinced I would buy a Korean H yet as I am still indoctrinated in the School of Subaru, but Hyundai are on the right path and getting better at it.

  23. Dan says:

It’s only understandable that Hyundai has to jump on the bandwagon.

IF it ever gets into production, like all concepts-to-production ideas, it will not look anywhere near the same. Time will tell I guess.

  24. For Toph/Shack et al... says:

    Comedians…

So funny, why don’t you guys start a stand-up…LOL LOL
