Honda CR-V Diesel launches from $38,220

The long-awaited Honda CR-V Diesel has joined Honda's mid-size SUV range 14 months after the launch of the fourth-generation petrol variants.

Priced from $38,220 before on-road costs, both all-wheel-drive CR-V Diesel grades (DTi-S and DTi-L) are powered by a 2.2-litre four-cylinder direct injection turbo-diesel that produces 110kW and 350Nm.

The CR-V DTi-S comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, while a five-speed automatic version is available from $40,590. The range-topping DTi-L is only available as an auto, priced from $45,340. The CR-V Diesel becomes the first diesel auto offered by Honda in Australia, and only the second diesel in the local line-up after the Civic hatch.

The CR-V Diesel commands a significant price premium over its petrol-powered siblings, which range from $27,490 for the entry-level front-wheel-drive VTi 2.0-litre model to $42,290 for the AWD VTi-L 2.4-litre variant.

Fuel efficiency favours the diesel models, with Honda claiming 5.8L/100km for the DTi-S manual (6.7L/100km for the auto) on the combined cycle compared with 7.8L/100km for the 2.0-litre and 8.7L/100km for the 2.4-litre petrol versions.

The CR-V Diesel gets a unique headlight assembly, LED daytime running lights and rear combination lamps, while the top-spec DTi-L version also receives active cornering lights.

Standard features of the entry-level Honda CR-V DTi-S include 17-inch alloy wheels, auto headlights and wipers, reversing camera with rear parking sensors, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, auto up/down power windows, dual-zone climate control, satellite navigation, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddleshifters (auto only).

The DTi-L gains 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlamps, front parking sensors, roof rails, keyless entry with push-button start, leather upholstery, heated front seats with power driver’s seat, and ambient door lighting. The only option across the CR-V Diesel range is metallic paint for $575.

Towing capacity for the CR-V Diesel auto is rated at 1500kg (matching all petrol variants), and rises to 2000kg for the manual version.

Diesel-powered CR-Vs will be sourced from Honda’s Swindon plant in the UK, unlike their petrol counterparts, which are built in Thailand.

Available in showrooms from this week, the Honda CR-V Diesel also joins Honda Australia's capped-price servicing scheme introduced in October last year. Under the program, servicing for the diesel-powered model is fixed at $354 per service over a five-year/100,000km period – around $70 more than the most expensive petrol service.
