Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG : 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 confirmed for flagship

An all-new twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine long expected to power the next-generation Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG has been confirmed, with the model due in early 2015.

Speaking with UK publication Auto Express, AMG CEO Tobias Moers said the all-new Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG will make its debut in "about a year".

Appointed to the top job at Mercedes-AMG GmbH in late 2013, replacing Ola Kallenius, Moers said, "You are now familiar with our 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine? Well you can imagine what happens when you put two of those together."

Referring to the 265kW/450Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre engine found in the A45, CLA45 and GLA45 AMG models – also known as the most powerful production four-cylinder engine in the world – Moers would not be drawn on potential power outputs of the new V8, saying only that AMGs tend to deliver more power than their rivals.

Now equipped with a newly developed twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine, the C63 AMG’s main competitor, the BMW M3, churns out 317kW and 550Nm. Up 8kW and 150Nm on the previous naturally aspirated 4.0-litre V8-powered M3, the new unit still trails the current C63 AMG’s naturally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 by 19kW and 50Nm.

Already blessed with 336kW and 600Nm in standard guise, or an even beefier 373kW and 610Nm in Edition 507 specification (pictured top), the next-gen 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8-powered C63 AMG is expected to lift the bar higher still.

Part of Mercedes’ goal to improve fuel consumption while boosting power outputs of engines throughout its line-up, the new engine will follow the discontinuation of the SLS AMG supercar – powered in Final Edition trim by a 435kW/650Nm version of the C63 AMG’s 6.2-litre V8 – and the introduction of a 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 into the SL63, S63 and E63 AMGs.

The engine could also find its way into the SLC sports car due to be revealed this year, and potentially, into a high-performance variant of the Infiniti Q50 sedan through an alliance between the luxury Japanese manufacturer and Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler. Speaking at this week’s Detroit auto show, Infiniti president Johan de Nysschen revealed that, if built, a production car based on the Q50 Eau Rouge concept would feature a V-cylinder engine with forced induction and outputs of around 372kW and 812Nm.

Although the all-new recently revealed C-Class range will remain predominantly a rear-wheel-drive proposition, it will also be the first C-Class available in all-wheel drive for right-hand-drive markets, leaving the door open for a future all-paw C63 AMG – a move that would mirror the new E63 AMG S-model in overseas markets.

The existing C63 AMG currently starts at $154,900, with the all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class range due to start arriving in Australian showrooms around the middle of the year.
