2014 Alfa Romeo Mito : pricing and specifications

The 2014 Alfa Romeo Mito Series 2 has launched from $22,500, teaming a sharper starting price with a new engine, infotainment system upgrades and subtle styling tweaks.

The new entry-level Mito TwinAir’s starting price makes it the cheapest Alfa Romeo sold in Australia in 27 years, and represents a $2700 reduction over the model it replaces.

The Alfa Romeo Mito TwinAir features the same turbocharged 0.9-litre two-cylinder petrol engine as the Fiat 500 and Panda models.

The pint-sized engine produces 77kW and 145Nm from 2000rpm, enabling the Mito to accelerate from 0-100km/h in a claimed 11.4 seconds. The TwinAir is available exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission.

Coming standard with stop-start technology, the engine claims to produce the lowest CO2 emissions of any non-hybrid petrol engine in the world (99g/km), while also claiming combined cycle fuel consumption of 4.2 litres per 100km.

The TwinAir variant joins the carry-over 1.4-litre MultiAir four-cylinder, which continues to produce 99kW and up to 230Nm of torque (with the six-speed dual-clutch ‘TCT’ automatic transmission). It claims 5.5L/100km on the combined cycle and 123g/km CO2.

The five-speed manual version makes less torque at 206Nm and uses 5.6L/100km with CO2 emissions of 129g/km.

The larger engine is offered in two grades: Progression, available with a five-speed manual from $24,500, and the six-speed TCT from $26,500 (up $1300); and the range-topping, TCT-only Distinctive from $28,000 (up $900).

Alfa will also add the new flagship QV grade to the Mito line-up late in Quarter 3 this year, with pricing and specifications announced closer to the car’s arrival.

The 2014 Mito features a chrome-plated frame for its signature, V-shaped Alfa Romeo grille, as well as chrome surrounds for the headlight and tail-light fittings.

Three alloy wheel designs are available: the TwinAir gets 15-inch alloy wheels, the Progression 16s, and the Distinctive comes standard with race-inspired 17-inch alloy wheels.

There’s also a new optional paint colour available, Magnesio Grey, which will be introduced at a later date, though availability and pricing is yet to be advised.

Inside, the new Mito scores parent company Chrysler Group’s ‘Uconnect’ infotainment system, which centres around a five-inch touchscreen.

While satellite navigation is unavailable across the range, the Bluetooth streaming function allows turn-by-turn instructions from smartphone-based navigation apps to be transmitted to the car and provides access to web-based radio stations, played through the Mito’s six-speaker audio system.

New cabin materials include a technical grain dashboard while the entry-level and Progression grades are available in three cloth seat trim combinations: black, black/white and black/bronze. Distinctive seat trims now feature new colour combinations including grey/black with grey or red inserts.

Leather upholstery can be optioned on the Distinctive for $2000, while a sunroof is available as a $2000 option across the range.

The new Alfa Romeo Mito is available in showrooms from next week.
