Kinglake fire victims treated to F1 display

By Matt Brogan |

Two boys who lost their homes in the Kinglake fires were yesterday given a spin through the main street of their fire ravaged town aboard a twin-seater Minardi with driver Zsolt Baumgartner.

Meanwhile a BMW Sauber, driven by Christian Klien, had the townspeople cheering as it burned rubber and did high-speed circuits of the main drag.

In a high-powered tribute to the victims of Black Saturday, a 220 metre stretch of the town’s main street was transformed into a mini-F1 race track.

The heroes of the Black Saturday bushfires will again be honoured on Sunday, when Grand Prix drivers are presented to the Albert Park crowd on the back of CFA fire trucks.

Fantastic idea, but qmy mind flashes back to the incident in America with the Australian Drag Racer doing burnouts, having an accident, and killing multiple people, and getting charged with murder/manslaughter (admittedly the charge did get dropped I think?). Can’t remember his name, but it seems like it could have happened all too easily again here.

Mind you, great way to pick up spirits in the town.

reminds me more of the F1 parade thing they did in 2005, was an awesome day! but, as is all too common these days, the ‘do gooders, fun police and pc brigade had to step in and ruin it for everyone saying the f1 cars went too fast…

“saying the f1 cars went too fast…”

For some reason I just love the idea of people saying F1 cars are too fast. That would be the point after all…

But yeah great idea. It’s good to see them putting these things to a good use. I don’t know why but stuff like F1 cars just seem to cheer people up. They really are incredible machines.
