Mini John Cooper Works concept previews new-generation hot-hatch

The Mini John Cooper Works concept will preview the next generation of the British brand's most spirited small car when it makes its world premiere at January's Detroit auto show.

Based on the all-new third-generation Mini Cooper hatch revealed simultaneously at the Los Angeles and Tokyo motor shows, the Mini John Cooper Works concept is said to combine racetrack style and technology with genuine everyday usability and "hardcore driving fun".

Though performance details have not been released, the JCW concept will take performance up a level from the 141kW/280Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder Cooper S.

Previewing the production car's sportier styling, the concept features an aerodynamically optimised body kit and newly designed 18-inch JCW light-alloy wheels.

Finished in exclusive Bright Highways Grey, the John Cooper Works concept has a new front bumper with large air intakes that replace the standard Mini’s fog lights, as well as LED headlights and a black grille surround.

A red roof, roof spoiler and exterior mirror caps join additional red highlights on the indicator and fuel cap surrounds, brake calipers, radiator grille and front and rear bumpers. Contrasting white sport stripes adorn the roof.

Completing the package are obligatory JCW badging and a centrally mounted JCW-stamped twin-exit sports exhaust system.

Engine specifications and performance claims are expected to be announced once the Mini John Cooper Works concept is unveiled at the 2014 Detroit auto show on January 13.

The production JCW is also expected to debut next year before joining the regular range in showrooms. The third-generation Mini Cooper goes on sale in Australia from March.
