With respect to the name Liberty as opposed to Legacy, as described by an older (mid to late 50′s) Australian (caucasian) ***Subaru*** salesman (yes the company salesman himself) who told me when I bought my first Liberty GT after I asked this very question of differing names, and I quote:

“…we would not let those jap b@stards use the name Legacy here…”

the ‘we’ to which he was referring was Legacy Australia with whom he had a strong affiliation and the ‘here’ is in Australia.

And that my friends is every word of the truth.

No, I dont think the new Legacy/Liberty is ugly. You guys just saw the concept model. The production version looks very nice. Might beat Camry and Accord ^^

^^ Subaru changed the name due to an organiztion in Austraia called “Legacy Australia” which aids veterans and their families during and after wars.

Nice of Subaru to do that!

Why is Legacy called as Liberty in Australia? There’s no difference between two cars.
The next generation Legacy is coming soon. So no need to buy this old one.

really want this car as it is reliable and drove one recently and the exhaust causes feelings in certain areas. Looks good as well, also good retained value.

Nah, not ugly. Visually challenging. But seriously, they need to stop getting anime cartoonist to design their cars. I half imagined the 2010 Liberty transforming like in that Citroen ad.

You’re right Iz Subaru have had a number of limited edition Liberties over the years based on the current model including an impressive STi Version

I’d say this is just Subarus way of saying “If you like the Look of the Liberty get one whilst you can”
Because they probably realise that upcoming model is ugly -like all the other current Subies.
