New Golf Variant Station Wagon
May 9, 2007 by Alborz Fallah
The Germans will get their hands on the new Golf Variant station wagon from the first of June this year, Volkswagen Australia has not confirmed if the station wagon Golf will make it down under.
With a cargo area capacity of up to 1,550 liters the station wagon is sure to please. Volkswagen is offering the new Golf Variant in the equipment lines Trendline, Comfortline and Sportline.
However, being a German car, even the base model Trendline comes with
- ESP,
- six airbags,
- 16-inch wheels,
- power windows front and rear,
- central locking with remote keyless entry,
- tilt-up cargo floor and asymmetrically split folding rear bench seat with armrests.
The higher end model Sportline comes with a newly designed, two-piece glass panorama sunroof with a length of 1.36 meters and width of 0.87 meters. Not bad for a golf!
Engine specifications run from a rather underpowered 75 kW to a more respectable 125 kW. With a choice of two diesel and three gasoline engines (German market – Australian details not confirmed), including four direct injection engines.
The base model engine is a 1.6-liter four cylinder that outputs 75 kW. Above that you get a choice of twincharged TSI engines (same engine as the new Golf GT). You will get 103 kW to 125 kW from the two variants. Moving on to the diesel engines, two strong TDIs of the Golf Variant at 77 kW and 103 kW are available.
There is also the choice of the revolutionary DSG dual clutch transmission as an option on all engines with the exception of the base model 1.6-liter petrol engine.

If they bring in the diesel variant(s), this thing will be a winner. In shopping for a similar vehicle in the last few weeks, I was after something with plenty of space for strollers, dogs etc. but still economical and easy to park in the local westfield.
The stigma attached to 4WD’s/SUV’s in the city is hard to dismiss, not to mention their lack of manouverability, green credentials and economy. The more forward thinking families will be looking to vehicles like this and the (spacially smaller) Mazda 6 diesel wagon as serious alternatives.
I just ponied up a ridiculous amount of money for a Citroen C4 Picasso because it was the only one to fit our criteria… I looked at this Golf wagon on British sites and though “if only”!
If Veedub bring the wagon to Oz, it should most certainly come with diesel and petrol variants. If they cant price it as a Golf, they should price it as a Jetta wagon, as they are the same car.
A very nice car, unfortunately the South African? made version will arrive here late and overpriced compared to the Japanese made opposition.
It will remain just a curosity item in the Australian market.
I know I’m a year late with this but if it ever does come onto the Aust’n market in diesel form, I’d buy one. Currently its only opposition is some French stuff and the Holden Astra Coupe. Ford have absolutely no plans to bring the lovely wagon of the next generation of Focus to our shores….sigh.
