2014 Subaru WRX: 0-100km/h in “just over” 5.0sec

The all-new fourth-generation Subaru WRX will claim a 0-100km/h sprint time of "just over five seconds" to become the best-performing WRX ever, according to the brand's US division.

Subaru America national product communications manager Dominick Infante made the claim in a newly released video about the new 199kW/349Nm four-wheel-drive Subaru WRX.

Highlighting the WRX's all-new turbocharged 2.0-litre ‘boxer’ engine (model designation FA), Infante points out that the new smaller unit will result in a 0-60mph (97km/h) in "just over five seconds" when teamed with the standard six-speed manual transmission.

The current 195kW/343Nm WRX, powered by its turbocharged 2.5-litre engine, claims 0-100km/h in 5.3 seconds – a time first achieved by the model in 2008.

Offered exclusively as a sedan and with the first time option of an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT), the new Subaru WRX, first unveiled at last week's Los Angeles auto show, is due to officially go on sale in Australia in March 2014 – marking 20 years since the original 155kW/270Nm, 6.6sec 0-100km/h WRX launched in 1994.

Subaru also this week began a pre-order campaign for the first 100 vehicles, of which 23 have been snapped up to date.

Tipped to start slightly above the outgoing model’s $39,990 entry price, the standard WRX will be joined locally in May by its more sporting, and yet-to-be-released sibling, the WRX STI.
