Lexus CT200h: facelifted hybrid hatchback unveiled in China

The facelifted Lexus CT200h has been unveiled at the Guangzhou motor show in China, revealing new details aimed at improving dynamics, comfort and driveability.

Following the release of the first official exterior images of the new Lexus CT200h last week – coming after spy shots seen earlier this month and last monthLexus has now revealed details that go beyond the new-look premium hybrid hatchback’s cosmetic alterations.

Underneath the Japanese car maker’s signature spindle grille, Lexus has added additional spot welding in a bid to strengthen and stiffen the CT200h’s body, while revised suspension tunes for standard and F Sport variants are designed to improve ride comfort and enhance driving dynamics respectively.

New spring rates and shock absorber valves join a resized rear stabiliser bar in changes that Lexus says enhance ride comfort without sacrificing agility. A traction control off switch has also been added for the first time.

Along with increased body rigidity, the new Lexus CT200h claims enhanced aerodynamics and quieter, more refined NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) parameters.

A refreshed cabin now also features a new Lexus IS-style 370mm-diameter steering wheel, an instrument binnacle-integrated 4.2-inch TFT screen, a thinner and fixed central TFT multimedia display screen and the second-generation Remote Touch Interface (RTI) system.

Audio and navigation systems have also been enhanced with new functions including hands-free and voice recognition control, while sound quality is said to have been raised, in part, by the use of bamboo loudspeaker diaphragm technology. New door panel inserts, upholstery designs and trim colours round out the interior changes.

The standard CT200h will offer buyers a choice of new 16- or 17-inch 10-spoke alloy wheels and 11 body colours – including a new Caliente Red hue – while the more aggressive F Sport variant is differentiated by a mesh grille, a roof spoiler and dark finish 17-inch alloy wheels.

A new two-tone colour scheme is also available for F Sport models, teaming eight exterior colour choices with a black roof.

Further distinguishing the sports variant are unique upholstery, aluminium pedals and scuff plates, leather accented steering wheel and shift lever, and ‘F Sport’ badging.

Upgrades to the CT200h’s hybrid powertrain are still yet to be announced but will join final specification and pricing details closer to its launch in the first half of 2014.
