Lexus sells its 15,000th RX in Australia

March 18, 2009 by Matt Brogan

Lexus has scored a huge milestone for its RX model today selling its 15,000th example in Australia.

The timing could not have been better for CarAdvice either with the all-new third generation RX 350 Sports Luxury currently on test in far eastern Victoria.

Launched in Australia in 2003, the RX 330 was the first vehicle in Australia to offer reversing cameras as standard. In 2006 the RX also adopted hybrid technology for the first time with its RX400h – which is still the world’s only luxury hybrid SUV.

lexus_rx350_sl_file_002

The RX is also the only luxury SUV to receive four consecutive Australia’s Best Car awards from the Australian Automobile Association.

“It’s quite appropriate that this milestone was achieved just as we launched all-new RX 350,” Lexus Australia chief executive John Roca said. “The RX, in 330, 350 and hybrid variants, has been one of our most popular models – making up a third of our local sales. All-new RX 350 will again set a category benchmark: it is more powerful, more efficient, more comfortable, safer and overall a more enjoyable vehicle to drive.”

The new RX 350 models are equipped with Lexus’ 3.5-litre quad-cam V6 engine which produces 204kW of power, 346Nm of torque and delivers exceptional fuel economy of 10.8 litres per 100km.

Current CarAdvice testing reveals combined fuel consumption figures of 11.7-litres per 100km with the car said to be “exceeding expectations”. More to follow next week.

Sounds suspiciously like the Aurion motor – albeit tweeked for a little more torque. Great donk though!

Simon, it is the same engine, just an extremely marginally different tune from what I understand. Good to see that the new RX finally gets a 6 speed auto as well.

OK, I’m going to ask a question here, but I want to make it crystal clear that it is in no way intended to be a swipe at Lexus, Toyota or any other brand for that matter. :-)

Right. Now we have made that clear. Up front I will say that I have zero experience with Lexus personally, other than having been a passenger in my previous boss’s RX350 once last year. It seemed like a nice car, seemed very refined, but at the time I had no idea what they cost. But I just looked at the Lexus website and see that they start from approx $78K, with top of the range models nearing $95K.

So, to my question. If what SteveH says is right, that the engine is the same as that found in the Aurion, are the levels of refinement, and the technological advancements in this car up to the levels that you would be expecting when it can be up to $50K more expensive than say, a Mazda CX-7? I know they are different cars, but is it a $40-50K different car if the engine is the same as that in an Aurion?

Probably an ignorant question to those who have experience with them, but I’m just curious as to what sets it apart from the rest.

      Cheers.

Fair question HAL. I had a 07 RX350 and would comfortably say it is worth every cent over a CX-7, regardless of where the mechanicals come from. It was a brilliant cruiser and easily the most comfortable car I have been in. Also, when you take into account the customer service from Lexus, in my opinion, it is easy to justify the price premium.

To some people the price will certainly be justified.
Lexus owners often get “toyota” bashed but it doesn’t stop them buying or often rebuying the brand. Horses for courses.
I wonder what Honda could do with a prestige business arm?

      says:

Yes, Lexus owners tend to stick with the brand, and even update new models of the same car. The service is meant to be good, but their finance packages are generally fantastic (on my understanding), and it makes them pretty attractive for leasing/hp packages (probably resulting in the “accountant’s car” jibes. I personally would have thought Honda would be on a par with Lexus even without a prestige arm, though I think the perception is that Hondas are for older folk.

      says:

thanks SteveH, I’m sure it’s a great car and those who pay the money think it’s entirely worth it.

So comfort and service is what your experience told you was worth the price premium. Fair enough. Just out of curiosity, if it was an 07 model, is there any specific reason why you don’t still have it (driving or mechanical reason I mean)?

      says:

HAL, the price difference between base CX9 and base RX350 is only 31K (50990 & 81900), and the top spec models 32K (62646 & 94900). So far from 50K. I presume you meant CX9, as CX7 has a smaller engine, so it would make more sense to compare a CX9.

I guess you can ask the same question with regards to why is X3 or X5 more expensive to the CX7 and CX9. There’s obviously a bit more features and refinement in those premium cars.

    10. Vote -1 Vote +1HAL
      says:

Dan, no I meant the CX-7 from a vehicle size perspective. From memory when I was a passenger in one it seemed about the same size as a CX-7, rather than the CX-9 (which seems like a giant of a car!). But I guess from an engine size perspective it would be better to compare the CX-9.

I guess I also didn’t compare to the BMW or Audi range because I already think they are extraordinarily expensive with options lists as long as your arm :-)

The Mazdas seem to be very well optioned already, and I have done a fair bit of driving in my uncle’s CX-7, which I found to be quite a good and fairly refined driving experience (from a cruising and city driving perspective). Just wondering where the $30/40/50K point of difference is, that’s all.

HAL, I changed jobs and didn’t want to take over the lease on the car as my wife had just had a baby and we were down to the one wage. If I could, I would have kept the car as I absolutely could not fault it. (I did however miss driving a manual)

^^ Honda already kinda has a prestige/sport brand – Acura in USA and it is quite successfull. Though we still do get most of the luxo cars under the Acura brand.

Anyone have an answer to why Toyota doesn’t also bring Scion here as their ‘cool’ alternative? I presume that boxy/funky cars are the craze now and they are quite fuel efficient and different in their own way, so they might be a sales success here.

Ofcourse driving one is another matter from what I have heard from the USA.

Customer retention at Lexus is very high. Which isn’t a surprise, and is a credit to them. The service is the best I have personally encountered, out of all the brands I’ve owned. The minute you step into the dealership, you get treated like royalty. And it continues after the sale. When servicing is due, they pick up your car for servicing from your home or work, and leave with you a brand new complimentary lexus to use for the time being, with full tank of fuel. Absolutely zero inconvenience. One time my car wasn’t finished on the friday, so I could keep their lexus over the whole weekend, they picked it up monday. When they drop your car off, it’s fully detailed. Here in perth, they store your car for you when you go to the airport. Just let them know when, you drive your car to the airport, they pick it up from you and store it safely. On return, you get it back at the airport, again fully detailed. While the cars are certainly nice and of high quality, it is also the service that makes owninig one just that much more enjoyable. There’s a few more benefits that come with owning one, but this will do.

bloody hell Dan, I had heard that Lexus had good customer service, but I didn’t know it was anything like that! That’s unbelievable. Is that level of service dependant on which car you buy from them, or don’t they discriminate?

      And thanks again SteveH.

      says:

Have to agree with Dan re the servicing. I used to have them pick up my car and leave a loan car and then drive the loan car back to the dealership to pick up my car. The only reason I drove back to the dealership was so I could have a play in someone else’s car. I know the Lexus dealership in Melbourne has an indoor computer driving range, so you can play 18 holes while your car is being serviced.

      says:

HAL, that’s correct. You can buy the base model cheapest IS250, you still get all those priviledges. Often you can ask what car you want as a rental, if it’s available, you’ll get it. Obviously not the most expensive ones though, but IS, RX, GS, are what you’d get as a loaner. But I’m sure if you ask kindly enough they may give you the IS-F or the LS for the day. I’m still yet to try that though :)

I was also told (not that I’ve done it, feels weird haha) I can stop by anytime past the dealership for a free barista-spec coffee. :P

    17. Vote -1 Vote +1Dan
      says:

Also, they say this lasts only for the full four years of the warranty. However they still give you a complimentary loaner vehicle, even if you have a 10 year old lexus getting serviced. Just that you have to go and drop it off and pick it up yourself.

Hey mazda’s are good cars too! its just that mazda corporation is still relatively small compared to Toyota/Lexus. But with what resources they do have, they build bloody damn good cars. (Although with a more sporty intention). I agree on the pretty average customer service, and the techno gadgets though. mazda seem to be lacking behind in this respect. Build initial quality though, i would say Mazda is better than the equivalent toyota. Just go check out a CX9 and compare it to the Kluger, Mazda 6 with the Camry/Aurion, CX7 with RAV4 etc. Long term reliability isn’t too bad either. And design wise mazda still has toyota trailing.

Anyway, Lexus’ are brilliant cars. Great cars, great service. Just a little bland.

Sorry Dan “most cars in europe are econobox size, so really won’t matter.”

Not sure what you mean by that. What doesn’t matter?

When I lived in Europe for many years, most countries charge heaps for rego for larger cars. If you were wondering why there is a lot of small hatches there with tiny 4 cyl engines, it’s for that reason. Anything with engines over 2L, annual rego costs go up heaps, almost exponentially. You really do have to be a rich bastard to be able to drive anything with a decent size engine, something we consider normal here. Also, small cars are obviously much easier to manouver around their tight cities. So what I’m getting at is, given that most would not be able to afford to register these cars on the roads, having no diesel is hardly the reason why it isn’t the most sold brand in europe. Hardly ever seen a V8. And if I did, it would have been an exotic. Their high fuel prices don’t help it either.

Dan – i’m obvisously not aware of where you stayed but with respect to observations and the UK you could not be foar more incorrect. Rego (or VED in the UK) is based on omissions now but rates have barely changed.
      The lowest is no charge for car producing less CO2 than 100g/km. Next 101 to 120 = £35p.a., next 121 – 150 = £120p.a, next 150 – 165 = £145p.a., next 166 – 185 = £170p.a., next over 185g/km = £210.00. next over 225g/km = £400p.a.
So you can see the difference is minimal bearing in mind the average family saloon produces say 155g/km of CO2.
And by the way whilst the vast majority are sub 2.0 litre cars there are an increasing number of larger engines nowadays, take the 15 cars in my office car park 35% of them are greater than 2litres. Mines a 3.0diesel Vectra by the way.
      So your wrong.

Those of you who comment without having driven Lexus RX should go and test drive one. BHP/torque numbers may be similar to Toyotas but there is alot of refinement put into the Lexus. You won’t realise this until you feel the refinement and build quality of the Lexus. I own one and I’ll tell you it is bloody reliable and well built. People in Lexus can certainly teach guys in Volvo, Ford a thing or two on how to build a good car/SUV.

I love my Lexus RX and will likely replace it with another RX when the time comes.

Well, I have driven all three models and I can say with confidence that none of them were equal to the X5 that was around at the same time. And the first one was completely useless. They do have good build quality but that is cancelled out by the fact that the interiors are ugly. I don’t care for the exterior either but that’s personal preference.
Why wouldn’t you buy the Mercedes or BMW? They handle better, they don’t exactly have bad build quality, they offer diesels, they are also very reliable, they are very much refined and they are more practical. There is no reason to buy a Lexus RX. Unless your boring and unimaginative and still think a German car will break in two or blow up every time you turn it on.

Right, well it’s good to see that this thread didn’t turn into the usual trail of rubbish then, isn’t it?

Dan & Wheelnut – do you ever actually go back over in the cold light of day to read some of the childish nonsense you two say to each other? It’s bloody pathetic, like to school children fighting over a sandpit.

There is absolutely no point in anyone else using the blog feature on this website when this crap is continually going on. Why don’t you 2 swap email addresses and take your arguments off-line? Everyone on here is fed up to the eyeballs with watching every article descend into this garbage.

Cupid. There are a lot more countries in Europe than just UK, where rego is based on the size of the engine. Enough said.

HAL, in the beginning I said it will probably be ruined by the usual suspects. And of course here comes Wheelnut and Realcars to fulfill the prophecy.

      QUOTE REALCARS:

“This article should be titled “Lexus RX finally catches up to lessser siblings”.

Toyota,I mean Lexus today announced that the RX series would receive the gearbox upgrades already rolled out across Aurion and Kluger several years ago…… Ha Ha Ha.

Toyota,I mean Lexus spokesman(different hat)says it’s only right considering they already share the same engines and free car washes and rolling out the red carpet to a chorus of trumpets only works for so long before customers realise the plebs are getting a better deal….LOL”

Yep Realcars the muppet to stir everything up again with his stupid comments which will always start someone. The his buddy Wheelnut comes along and continues. Absoluetely pathetic.

And who is this Axel retard? This place has become a joke LOL

Dan, I know you predicted that they would come along and stir the pot. But why do you let yourself get sucked in and bite back all the time. It’s totally pointless, absolutely nothing constructive comes out of it at all other than the same old insults and irrelevant discussions. It’s mind-numbing to watch day in, day out. Particularly when the main reason most of us are on here at all is to get what the website is supposed to offer i.e. Car Advice, and to share stories and first-hand experiences with certain cars with each other. Of course there will always be times when disagree with others opinions, and we should be able to respectfully debate things with each other.

The full-on arguments have been happening on almost every article lately, and it’s just destroying it.

      Alex,
Your comment “Unless your boring and unimaginative and still think a German car will break in two or blow up every time you turn it on” is unsportsmanlike. You have your opinion and I’ve my opinion. There is no need to attack another person’s opinion/experience.
      Thank you and Good Night.
