Toyota Aqua Cross concept: tough-looking Prius C teased

The Toyota Aqua Cross concept – a rugged-looking Prius C with off-road-inspired styling – has been teased ahead of its debut at next week's Tokyo motor show.

The Toyota Prius C-based hybrid city-car crossover concept features metallic underbody protection panels, fog lights, silver mirror caps and roof rails, and black plastic cladding around its wheel arches, side skirts and bumpers.

Though it has a unique grille and headlights, the Aqua Cross concept shares its other basic design cues with the Toyota Aqua Air concept – a convertible version of the Prius C that is also headed for the Tokyo show.

The Aqua Cross concept's cabin is distinguished by black upholstery and trim, green stitching, green-piped carpets and aluminium pedals.

Like the Aqua Air concept, the Aqua Cross is said to be powered by the regular Prius C's hybrid powertrain, teaming a 54kW/111Nm 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle petrol engine with an electric motor for a total system output of 74kW.

Full details of the Toyota Aqua concepts will be revealed when the show kicks off on November 20.
