2009 Ford Mondeo tri-fuel for Europe

March 12, 2009 by George Skentzos

Ford of Europe is set to add a rather frugal and versatile model into its Mondeo line-up, capable of running on three different types of fuels.

The new tri-fuel Mondeo is compatible with either petrol, ethanol or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) which results in a vastly extended range and lower running costs.

The entire Mondeo line-up – including sedan, hatchback and wagon – is available with the new tri-fuel system, all featuring a 108-kW 2.0-litre engine as standard.

The combined petrol and ethanol tank is capable of storing up to 70-litres of fuel, while the separate LPG tank will have a capacity just under 49-litres.

This gives the tri-fuel Mondeo an expected range of 850km on petrol or ethanol and 460km on LPG for a combined total of 1,310km on just one fill-up.

The wagon version is slightly disadvantaged thanks to its added weight, boasting a slightly diminished range of 1,230km.

We will keep you posted as to whether Ford Australia will consider selling this model locally.

Does it impact on load capacity?

What a pain to go to two different pumps at the same service station if you needed to fill both tanks. The guy/girl behind the counter would think you are trying to do a runner without paying if there weren’t any shared pumps.

Worked well in the cannon ball run

  3. Supercujo says:

I’d rather go with lots of one fuel type and make it really efficient than having to compromise between all these fuels.

  4. Carl says:

The LPG tank seems a bit small, other than that not a bad idea…..most smart people would only use LPG and not bother with the less efficient ethanol that has pushed the price of most foods up considerably in the last few years and doesn’t provide value for money anyway!

  5. Andrew M says:

    I would rather a 90L LPG tank and a 30 L fuel tank.

Im gonna hazard a guess and say they dont have the LPG supplies we have therefore why the LPG isnt given much credit. also perhaps fitting a bigger LPG tank whilst keeping the petrol tank might pose a problem.
Eitherway getting 120L under a car like this is impressive and once only seen on 4X4’s running duals

Also are they saying they get 108kw on all fuel types, or are they only speccing the petrol

  6. Andrew M says:

wonder if they are going to do a Diesel/LPG

  7. Reckless1 says:

Not of much interest to Australians, no-one buys the Mondeo anyway.

An LPG Falcon would be better, except for the ancient technology LPG system it uses.

Buy an Eco Diesel model and you’ll get 1000ks per tank anyway. A fuel range of over 600ks per tank is a waste, generally, because on long trips you have to have rest stops, and any more range just means you are carting fuel around needlessly which causes you to use more.

  8. Andrew M says:

    Reckless,
The new system for the LPG falcon is due at the start of this year.
Interesting to note that the “Old tech” ford system can out do the “new tech” system for economy

Agree on the carrying extra fuel around thingy though

  9. Pablo says:

Is LPG readily available in the UK?
Is it heaps cheaper than ULP like here?

  10. Minnow says:

Supercujo, god your life must be soo difficult if you have to go to, dare i say it, TWO fuel pumps during one fuel station visit. The fuel attendants actually prefer if us LPG people fill both tanks then pay as it is faster instead of paying separately.

I think this is a brilliant idea, they can use LPG only for as long as they please, while they can leave the petrol tank with say 1/4 just to keep the fuel pump submerged and for emergency use and to save weight. But the reason i think they have the duel fuel system in the UK is because there isnt as many LPG stations around as australia. Good idea i think, lets BRING IT Ford.

  11. Sam says:

850km on petrol OR ethanol? Are you sure you typed that correctly? How on earth does it do that when ethanol needs to be run far richer than petrol?

Good concept though. Basically it’s just a typical dual-fuel car that can also cope with a high percentage of ethanol in the petrol tank. Now all we need is E85 to become readily available at the pumps.

I guess nearly 6,000 in 2008 is nothing then. Nearly as much as BMW sold 3 series last year too.

  13. Cupid Stunt says:

Restless – your talking crap “A fuel range of over 600ks per tank is a waste, generally, because on long trips you have to have rest stops,”
Tuesday and Thursday this week I drove 1080k’s each day over a ten hour period (two 5hr splits). I stopped once each way for comfort breaks of 5 mins. Each trip driving a Vectra 1.9CDTi with no stops for fuel (58litres of fuel each trip). You don’t need an “Eco diesel” to do this.

Also the Mondeo sold in the region of 700plus cars last month according to Frontman.
So basically everything you wrote above is factually incorrect. Good contribution there eh!

  14. Cupid Stunt says:

No – LPG is quite uncommon here (UK), so much so that the local supermarket chain removed their LPG fill-up.

  15. Paul says:

great progress, bring it in I say. Hopefully the LPG tech is top notch rather than older gas tech.

Saw some interesting stuff @ the Melb Motor show with an F6 310 on gas dyno’d to the same power so no performance degradation is possible.

  16. Marcus says:

After seeing a few Mondeos on the road now I’ve come to the conclusion they look ugly.
I cannot get used the those ugly head-lights and tail-lights and they look too bloated on the road….next
