2007 Dodge Caliber SX Road Test

DODGE CALIBER
By Paul Maric |
FIND DEALS

Dodge, it’s shorthand for Dodgy. That was my first concern about the new Dodge Caliber; my second concern was that it was from America. But I didn’t want to judge a book by its cover, so I grabbed the keys to see what this American brute was all about.

I must admit, the exterior styling is quite dramatic and appealing. The Caliber certainly looks like a large vehicle from the exterior, but it doesn’t feel big or cumbersome whilst driving, along with parking. The American styling turned quite a few heads, signifying the fact that the styling is on par with what consumers are after.

Once inside, the tables turn quite quickly. It doesn’t take long to realise why American vehicles are loathed so much. Almost everything used to build the interior is plastic – and I mean everything! Although most things felt solid in terms of their build, there simply weren’t any quality materials used that resembled the Caliber’s German and Japanese competition.

Build materials aside, the interior was very roomy for a vehicle in this sector. The sound system packed quite a punch, easily exceeding that of its competition. Boot capacity with the seats upright is 352L, on the other hand, with the seats down, a mammoth capacity of 1013L can be achieved. Below the boot floor is a space-saver spare tyre.

On the road, the Caliber doesn’t leave all too much to complain about. The SX model being test driven comes with a 1.8-litre, 4-cylinder engine which produces 110kW and 168Nm of torque. The vehicle being test driven was optioned with the Continually Variable Transmission (CVT). This fancy piece of kit isn’t like a regular transmission which has segmented gears. A CVT can infinitely vary gear ratios and never ‘changes gears’. It’s an odd sensation as the revs seldom move from their position.

There are four Dodge Caliber models on offer – the ST, SX, SXT and R/T. There are also four, four-cylinder engines available – a 1.8-litre, 2.0-litre, 2.0-litre turbo-diesel and a 2.4-litre. The four engines use (on average) 7.4, 8.1, 6.1 and 7.7-litres per 100km respectively.

Standard features include: Particulate and odour air filter; air-conditioning; cruise control; central locking; fog lamps; power mirrors; folding and heated mirrors; CD-player with 4-speakers; security alarm; rear spoiler and power windows.

Safety features include: 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS; driver and passenger front airbags; side curtain airbags and front seatbelt height adjusters. Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is available as an option – this feature should come standard with the vehicle in my opinion.

Dodge Caliber SX Road Test

The Caliber range starts at $23,990 for the 1.8-litre ST and goes right up to $31,990 for the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel SXT. The test vehicle I drove was valued at $28,490.

With ambitious looks, it’s not hard to see that Aussies will fall for the Caliber. Aside from the reign of plastic inside the car, I quite enjoyed driving around in the Caliber. Visibility was adequate and fuel economy was excellent. With that in mind though, it stacks up against some pretty rough Euro competition. If you’re after a small-medium sized vehicle, test drive the new Dodge Caliber, you never know, you might just like it.

  • Lazybones

Whats with the yanks and the massive grille, at least they removed the chrome in the hope it would be sellable to the aussie market :)

    + impressive performance for a 1.8ltr engine
    + impressive use of space
+ good choice of engines offered

    - Looks like a brick on wheels

Ha Ha, and my anti-spam word for this comment was “Dodge”

  • http://www.alborzfallah.com alborz

the interior is a litte..iffy if you ask me, not so keen on the whole blue thing going

and the styling doesnt do it for me either,

I think it almost looks like a SsangYong!

Oh well, its just a Dodge, I wouldn’t go near an American car unless someone held a gun to my head.

  • Myke

I dont mind the look, atleast it is different.
The quality looks under par though, but as said by Lazybones their is a good choice of engines, which is always good to see.

  • Sam

agree with alborz, interior looks hideous in my eyes. being american id put the build quality in doubt to. 300C was enough, we dont want anything else now chrysler. well maybe the viper would be nice….

  • donald

you’ve gotta be kidding, a brute, dodgy, i’ve had 2 toyota’s and none of them were fitted out with anything other than plastic. so your gripe is that yankee plastic doesn’t have the same feel and quality as jap plastic.

well they must be doing something right cause ford and holden in oz, put together don’t sell as many cars to private citizens as this little beauty has in the states in the past 8 months.

  • Paul

ROFL ‘little beauty’…. beauty is the last word that comes to mind. Ive seen this car in person, the interior plastics are as cheap as they appear in the photos. The cars presence is as ugly as it appears in the photos. I could go on… but I think the Australian public has its say on this, I doubt very much will get sold (I certainly have not seen 1 one of these on the road)

  • Russ

Okay – so, ” Almost everything used to build the interior is plastic – and I mean everything!”

Can anyone please enlighten me as to what other manufacturers use in their interiors? A new Mazda/Totota/Nissan is hardly overflowing with walnut and leather either when last I checked!

  • Sam™

i think its the fact that it has a plasticy feel when u get in.

theres the difference between something that feels plastic and shitty and something that feels and is quality, but is still made of plastic. kind of hard to explain, but when you actually sit in the car and go for a long drive and get used to the interior it feels crappy compared to toyota, honda and any of the germans.

for instance when i sat in one for the first time the other day everything in it felt flimsy, poor quality, and if you punched the dash hard enough you would put a huge hole through it.

personally ill sit my ass in anything most of the time, but a lot of consumers are very picky, and if i was forking out good money for a car i would want to make sure its one of the best in its class. sadly, this isnt….

  • Scotty

I think this new Dodge looks pretty cool from the front but the back looks a little square like, not saying thats a bad thing though. I saw it at the Motor Show and sat inside, it’s true that it is fairly ‘plastic like’ inside but disagree to it being flimsy. Everything looked quite durable in fact. And i must disagree with what sam said and ‘if you punched the dash hard enough you would put a huge hole through it.’ IF YOU PUNCHED ANY CARS DASHBOARD HARD ENOUGH IT WOULD BREAK, AND WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT ANYWAY!!! I just thought that comment was a little ridiculous.

In my view this car would be perfect for me as i’m rough and dirty (driving of course) and could clean out the inside of it easier than most fabric interior which i’d wreck.

  • Sam™ the one eyed bogan

shall i bring up the whole recent jeep debacle? actually no, i better leave it at that….

believe me, it wouldnt take much for this thing to fall to pieces mate, there are certain things you just know when you hop into a car. its a pity cos i dont mind dodge, just american build quality leaves very little to be desired.

  • Prakesh

Iam a proud owner of Caliber and Iam really loving it.
Theres nothing like it in the market and it really turns heads.Built quality is good. There is no squeeks or rattles.Plastics, well I’ll say get used to it thats the way most manufactures are heading.

Plenty of Grunt under the bonnet (2.0 -115kw)

    GO DODGE

  • FRANZ CHONG

    This is Al Bundy’s Dodge.

  • ctsj

message @ prakesh, do you know how your brakes are holding up? i would be interested to know how many k’s you get out of pads & rotors, and if you get the brake dust all over your front wheels constantly which is a tell tale sign of aggressive wear. i have a cherokee which at 26000 klm’s needs a complete (pad & rotor) replacement at about $1800, and chrysler advise this will almost be a yearly expense, would love to know if you experience the same issue.Pads and rotors just dont meet our aussie driving conditions and you will get stiffed by chrysler unless you get a warranty claim in before 12mth/20000 klm and even then they will say it is a grey area and may just expect you to pay and keep paying every year you own the car.Sorry to burst your bubble but most cars imported to here made for overseas markets will suffer this same fate and then even some of our local makes also have it just not quite to this extreme extent.would love to hear from others that own any chrysler, jeep, dodge that is having a similar problem.

  • Graham

I bought the diesel version which has the leather interior and 18inch wheels. Nothing wrong with the huge 310nm of diesel torque! It has traction control which is great on slippery boat ramps. It easily tows the boat and carries a ton of gear. The fuel economy is excellent at around 6 l/100k.
I would have had to buy a Pug, VW (same engine&gearbox) or Audi to get similar performance and fuel economy. But the Euros don’t have the big interior and they are a lot more money.

  • BIG DAZZA

It’s amazing how people who Don’t own a Caliber like to sit and Dog it, but those who actually put their money on the line and own one are more than Happy with it. It’s also pretty funny to read what Aussies think of American cars as these comments sound identical to what Americans are saying about the Cars we build. I was just reading US Reviews about our Holden (Chevrolet) Monaro’s and SS’s, and Mitsubishi Magna’s (Diamante’s). They say not to buy Aussie made cars due to poor build quality and how they are not suited to local conditions. But regardless, I love the look and whole concept of the Dodge Caliber. Yes, it has heaps of Plastic, everywhere, and it reminds me a lot of the new Boeing 777 I caught to Singapore which was lined with flimsy plastic all over. The difference is that Dodge Caliber’s don’t cost $385 Million Dollars and arn’t expected to hurtle through the Air at Mach One. While On sale now for $19,900 + on roads, I cannot think of any other Car on the Australian Car Market, beside the Caliber with this much Space and Bling, even if your budget stretched to $35,000.

  • http://. roberto

What creature designed this, mate the car looks disgusting from the front. The AU when released looked better and that was a shower of shit OOPS SORRY… BUT TRUE!

  • Bavarian Missile in the USA

Mate you thought Boeing was crap,I just flew Jet Star.Their planes have engines made by General Electric.Thats scary!!!!!!!!!!!!But seriously your spot on,just read an article here on the VE got a good write up but the previous Monaro AKO Pontiaic was said to have inferior build quality and suspension from the stone age. That comes from the YANKS!!!!

The test drive in the Shelby in the next few days will be interesting, stay tuned !

    Cheers

    Lisa

I just have to say that My new Silver Caliber is delightful. I have been a Classic Car Dealer for 20 Plus Years and have owned over 200 Cars personally, usually there are 6 at my house at a time. And I can tell you that I am amazed at the Looks and Head Turning I get when simply just driving it down the Road. I dropped my wife off at her work in the Caliber this week and that night I was told by my wife about the talk it caused at work. Some girls were suggesting that we must have paid $60,000 for it, and some thought it was a Lexus or BMW. One Wag even thought it was a small Porsche Cayenne. When my wife mentioned the price there was disbelief and she was actually accused of Lying. Something my wife never does. One of the Managers there has just paid More for a Used Hyundai, and was Stunned that she could have bought one of these for that price. I am so happy with this Car I am now selling My Infiniti Q45 V8 and My Saab. This Dodge is a Keeper.

  • gregbro

I have the SXT 2Lt CVT Auto and have had it for 4 Months and can confidently say this is one of the better cars I have had for many years.
I am also amazed that so many make comment and they have either not seen it in person or have not driven one or they just know, (this is often referred to as Narrow Minded).

Yes the interior is All plastic – So Is my Other car – a Mazda, and my last car was also plastic but also had the Fake Plastic Wood Look (yes a ford Fairmont – Australian built car – that was a total lemon after only 3 years and 65000 Kms). I would say the plastic in the dodge is less appealing because it is very blocky unlike the more rounded styles in many other cars. The main problem I have found with it is that being so light in colour it marks easily.
Everyone I know who sees my car are very impressed with it and like the look – no it is NOT cute but it is not meant to be – those who do not like it probably have the lime green pimped up OLD nissan or similar with the 6 foot spoilers and the 60 inch Speaker – if this is the case I see why they do not like the look of the Dodge.

The CVT Auto does take a bit of getting used to, and I noticed that from start if going up steep hill it could be a bit sluggish (I was used to a 4 Lt V6 – which is considerably different) but the car is very smooth once cruising along on the motorway – you do need to watch your speed as it is very easy to be at 120 and not realise it.
I have started using Caltex 10% Ethanol Unleaded E10 and find that the dodge seems to be much more responsive and up hill starts no longer seem to be sluggish (perhaps I have just become more accustomed to the CVT) – but I have seen a definite improvement in performance since using the E10.

It has Air Con, Alarm, Cruise control, 6 disc CD player 9 speakers (excellent sound system), front and side air bags, alarm, doors lock when you reach 20km/hr, 18 inch wheels, rear seats fold flat and provide heaps of room for carrying bulky items, the cooler in the glove box I have found is pretty much a gimmick as is the torch in the boot (but some people may find these very useful), There are a few oddities that relate to the car being based on a left hand drive – the Boot release is on the Passenger side (Driver side in America) there is also ONLY key entry on the Left Front Door – although central locking is standard so this is of no importance (again it would be correct if it is in USA), and finally the side mirrors are on the wrong sides.
Rear and Front Vision are Poor in terms of parking – but I found this in all the other cars I looked at before deciding on the Dodge. Reverse camera is very useful to be able to see what is LOW behind you.

So far so good and I am sure my dodge will continue to be a reliable car (so far it is better than the $40K + Ford and Holden I previously had). You will either like or dislike the Dodge – if you like it give it a go and take one for a drive – If you do not like it get something else and don’t whinge about the cars you don’t like based on photo’s or preconceived ideas or other peoples opinions.
    Keep well

  • http://LOVE.COM DANE

I think this car looks better in real life, yeah its not the most powerfull but why do you want, nevertheless need power in a car like this, and i think i would choose it over a sizuki any day.

  • Heather

Am thinking of upgrading, and have heard both good and bad about the Caliber. Was just wondering how pricey and hard to get spare parts are. Thanks. Heather.

  • Bavarian Missile

No idea about the cost, but all car dealers have to carry a range of normal serviceable parts but like any imported car there is always something they wont stock! Im not sure I would buy one though……

  • Sarah

We have had our dodge caliber sxt 2litre turbo diesel for just over a week – wow what a car!!! Not only does it drive beautifully but as many of you have said it sure does turn heads!! We think this car is true value for money and not only that, we are continually saving every day as we are currently getting 6.1/100km and we are city driving!! Anyone thinking about buying one – just test drive one and you will be sold
    We are two happy customers!!

  • Jesse

I think that this car looks awesome. Maybe all the people who don’t like it are just too old to appreciate something new.

  • Prateek

    Hi There,

I own Dodge Caliber and i just have to say that its an excellent car for young crowd.. it very spacious from inside and with the sports back caliber simply rocks..
Aussie people will definately start thinking out of Toyota, Honda and Holden with Dodge on the market…
i’ll give 4/5 star to Dodge Caliber

  • Duck

“Aussies will fall for it!”……………………….YEAH RIGHT!!!!!!!

You can tell that it is a 100% american with its styling (not saying all there styling is bad but this is a bad influence!) And i dont like the dash its very boxy like the Jeep Compass (American too!)

  • Ania

Im wanting to buy the caliber, but my father (being older and “wiser”) thinks its a bad idea seein as its an american car etc… would anyone know if there is much of a difference in price with parts, services for the car in comparison to holdens, fords toyota’s etc… i realy want the dodge, already taken 2 test drives and both times i loved it more and more. but my father is skeptical about the whole thing…. anyone, please help!!!

  • Greg

I took this car for a test drive.
I have never posted a comment on a forum and probably won’t in the future but I was compelled to say that is the worst car I have ever driven and been in.
I rate it up there with the an tractor…actually that might be a bit better

  • Tixy

I’m another one thinking about purchasing this car. My previous car was a Peugeot (much loved) and currently driving around in a Corolla.

In terms of looks, you will either hate it or love it. I loved it at first look, I showed a friend of mine who is also considering purchasing a new car and she also liked it’s styling, but it definitely won’t appeal to all.

I’m definitely keen to take a test drive and see how it goes. The one downfall is the interior. There was not as much plastics in the interior of my Pug, but the Corolla is definitely all plastic, however, as it’s got that ‘pebbled’ appearance it doesn’t seem to stand out as much as the smooth plastic in this car. So we’ll have to see how that goes.

The only concern I have is the cost of upkeep and maintenance. I definitely don’t want to go the route of the Peugeot again in these costs!

Just going by the given specs of the car and not having driven it, I do think it’s good value for the price. There’s few cars available from new in that price range with that type of engine and features.

  • Paul

Not a bad 2 wheeler. My only concern would be the residual/resale value with a few km’s on it. And the reliability of Dodge.

  • Big Dazza

Well, I am back to report again after owning my new Caliber for 12 Months. I can honestly say that buying this vehicle was a wise move and I am more than happy with it. It has had a couple of minor niggles which were quickly resolved at no charge and these were farsical really. Firstly I blew up the front speakers with loud rock and roll. Dodge replaced these for me with a heavy duty upgraded set for free. last month the car developed a miss, which worried me, but was revealed to be a loose connector on the coil, so no problem. At christmas I drove my entire family and luggage from Brisbane to Sydney and back and had a wonderful, effortless trip. It only cost $70 in fuel each way (900 kms), and I didn’t stop for fuel until I got to Port Maquarie (600 KM’s), still with a Third of a tank. As for resale value, I was offered almost all that I paid for the car as a trade in on any new Chrysler product. In fact, I could have upgraded to a Luxury New Chrysler Sebring, with Leather, for just $6000 change over. These cars usually sell for over $34,000 and mine is a base model Caliber. Have now travelled 16700 Km’s and more than happy and will definately buy a Dodge or Chrysler as my next Car. As for parts supply, I was stunned at the amount of cool stuff for caliber’s on eBay USA, and just how cheap it all was. Also, with your 3 year warranty, you won’t need to worry what the parts cost as you won’t be paying for them. There is a good reason that these Cars are Rental Vehicles in the US. They are cheap to buy, cheap to run and more reliable than other cars in it’s price category.
On first test drive, they do feel Heavy, sluggish, high up etc, but that is just because most aren’t used to the new generation of SUV vehicles that are blitzing the Highways. Spend a week in one and You probably will never go back to anything else.

  • avis

i picked up a used caliber after 3 japanese dogs, always in the shop, and with no elbow room. this car was 1) affordable 2) roomy for passengers and a very expandable space for hauling when you need it 3) a fun drive 4) and, if you are a music lover – i have absolutely not heard a better stereo system in any of my friends bmws or mercedes. they will be the first to admit it! we believe that it could possibly be the interior shape of the car that might be the reason for it… whatever it is, an audiophile who just needs some inexpensive, fuel friendly, transportation should not count this baby out.

nuff said. oh, did i mention that i am japanese, lol!!!

also, when the aussie’s start building cars – i want to be the first to review them.

  • senses

i used to have dodge caliber. first impression?? really a lovely car for us. but after 5-6 mos used, i noticed that the suspension are noisy. plus the cooler not working .so i decided to switch to CX-7.

  • http://dodge Tim

I have had a Dodge Caliber for over a year. I commuted to work over 200k a day and have had ZERO problems. I have left the lights on a few times though. That was not a problem either …they turned themselves off. I like the cooler in the glove box for my drinks and I can fold down the seats and even the front passenger seat and haul as much as my pickup truck inside this auto. I enjoy watching peoples faces as they laugh at me trying to put something big and later gasp as I fit it inside…example hauling wood or I put a door in it and still was able to the back. I like the transmission too…talk about reliability it doesnt even need the fluid to work. I drive down dirt roads all the time and a rock put a leak in the fluid. The only way I realized I had a problem is when I got to my destination and noticed a smell I WAS OUT of trans fluid and made it to my destination. When I was first received the Dodge I was hit by a truck. I dont care whatever the crash test ratings say I was fine…got it repaired and used this car, more like abused this car. I have put more use on it than most people do in 10yrs. I can ALWAYS depend on it starting and getting it to my destination. My negative is just like everyone else to much plastic. If you want performance, milage, reliability, room to handle almost anything, safety AND be able to afford…well then your stuck with the Dodge Caliber no one offers all of them if you want to be able to afford all of them EXCEPT for the Dodge Caliber. If I am too excited over this thing it is because everything else has fallen apart on me sorry that includes volkswagen, toyota(my brakes failed I wrecked},fords and others. I had more options travelled farther and no issues EVER …I am sold on this vehicle.

  • BK

    So
    Dodge caliber or Nissan Dualis?

  • FRUGAL_ONE

Ugh! I can’t believe how terrible American cars are!

Give me a Toyota/Mitsu/Honda any day!

    Cheer

    F-O

  • BIGDAZZA

Well, had my Caliber for over 20 months now and still no problems. Have travelled 36,000 km’s in it, which is about once around the planet. I still love the aggressive look of it and so do other motorists. As soon as the 2010 model Caliber hits the showroon floors next year I am buying another one.

  • BIGDAZZA

One point to remember about this car. You may never want to drive anything else again. Only other Dodge’s now appeal to me like the NITRO and Avenger.

PS: I’ve now come to this conclusion- If you can’t drive a Dodge, Dodge a Ford.

  • baby muscle

If you all are wondering what we “americans” are thinking about the Dodge Caliber it is simply this – baby muscle car. The old muscle cars were the tough looking camaros, cudas, mustangs, etc. This is a smaller version of the tough looking old style muscle cars. I have had mine for over a year and would not trade it for anything. Absolutely no problems whatsoever with it – NONE.

  • Jol

Saw a Caliber with 19″ wheels the other day, obvious question, why not 20″….lol

The dealer said it was still street legal with the 19″ wheels as they were only 2″ off standard. So insurance still covers.

  • Big Dazza

Well, finally did sell my Caliber as I went overseas for a while. When I returned I found the Caliber had jumped $6000 in price so I opted for a Hyundai Tucson City. It saved me $5k and is a much bigger SUV. Love it.

  • sore as hell

T-Boned in the side I thought it had side air bags I have neck and back injuries headaches a little forgetful.Oh wait were talking about the 2007 Dodge Caliber Nice sound system cooler in the glove box drop down speakers in the gate.Great set up for a DWI waiting on the inspector to give me the final analysys on why the Bags did’nt deploy

  • Liam

Hey forum, I just spent the weekend away in Victor Harbor for schoolies (from Adelaide). Drove the 2007 dodge caliber(yanks can’t spell calibre*) ST model there and back. Nothing felt better than being seen cruising through the middle of victor in a beastly looking car….
Nothing felt worse than driving through victor in this beastly looking car…, as far as petrol goes, economic is the word, but going from 80-100kmph felt like a catapilar.
I love the car, just bought one for $10,000 with 60,000 under the bonnet. But if performance is what you’re looking for – I’m talking a ‘hoon-mobile’. turn away, this is not the car for you.
PS: THE PLASTIC ONLY STARTED BOTHERING ME WHEN I READ THIS!!!!

  • David

Have had a 2007 Dodge Calibre just under a year and still love it. First noticed Dodge because of their gutsy names: Calibre, Avenger, Nitro etc. no wimpy names there & Chryslers are the same & what about their styling in your face, modern, streamline but at the same time they all have this retro almost tongue in cheek feel going on. Dodge, Chrysler & Jeep are all stand outs & do turn heads. The all over design, branding & presentation of these cars was a innovative master-stroke in the car market today. Now to the interior, again they’ve come up with goods. The unique (even a little quirky), but at the same time very classy & practical styling grabs you immediately, makes many other cars seem a bit ho hum. But it’s not just all about the looks, it’s extremely comfortable, great safety rating, heaps of power & a delight to drive. And guess what the plastic bits are easy to clean. I think many people who are negative about these cars would not have even sat in one. But I got to say if you don’t like this car (& all the range) I’m sorry but I think you might be a little bit boring, time to smell the roses & take another (closer) look. Needless to say I’m wrapped. Anyway got to go, hmmmm, think I might go for drive. Cheers

  • billy

hi there i have been looking in buying a dodge caliber
and i read alot of forums and im impressed with all the comments
but one thing that hasnt been mentioned in the price for parts and serves
    any comments on that ????
