Nissan Pathfinder priced from $39,990

The softer-styled fourth-generation Nissan Pathfinder's $39,990 starting price makes it almost $9000 cheaper than the previous base model, positioning the new entry-level front-wheel-drive ST directly up against the Hyundai Santa Fe ($37,990), Ford Territory ($39,990) and Toyota Kluger ($40,490) 2WDs.

The Pathfinder ST is also available in 4WD specification from $44,290.

The mid-spec Pathfinder ST-L costs $50,290 (2WD) and $54,290 (4WD), while the flagship Pathfinder Ti tops the range at $60,790 (2WD) and $64,890 (4WD).

All Nissan Pathfinder models are powered by a 194kW/325Nm 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine, which takes the place of its predecessor’s 140kW/450Nm 2.5-litre four-cylinder and 170kW/550Nm 3.0-litre V6 diesel engines. The Pathfinder’s petrol powerplant is teamed exclusively with an automatic continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Official data will be revealed at the Pathfinder’s local launch, though overseas figures suggest 2WD models will consume approximately 10.6 litres per 100km while 4WD models will be slightly thirstier at 11.2L/100km. The existing diesels consume 8.5L/100km (2.5-litre four-cylinder) and 9.3L/100km (3.0-litre V6).

The leap from third to fourth generation is the most significant in the history of the Nissan Pathfinder, which shifts from the old car’s off-road-biased ladder frame underpinnings to a more refined, car-like monocoque chassis.

Detailed specifications will be revealed at launch, with Nissan Australia confirming only that the new model will be “impressively equipped” and feature the brand’s versatile ‘EZ Flex’ seven-seat system.

The arrival of the fourth-generation Nissan Pathfinder comes more than 18 months after the near-production-ready Pathfinder concept debuted at last year’s Detroit auto show.
