Kia Rondo scores five-star Euro NCAP safety rating

The all-new Kia Rondo has achieved the maximum five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP in the latest round of crash tests.

Known as the Carens in some overseas markets, the Kia Rondo achieved 94 per cent for protection of adult occupants, 76 per cent for child occupants, 64 per cent for pedestrians and 81 per cent for safety assist systems.

The Rondo scored maximum points in the side barrier test, offering good protection of all body regions, and for its protection of the 18-month-old dummy and pedestrians' legs.

The side impact test did, however, result in the head of the three-year-old dummy not being properly contained within the protective shell of the child restraint, making the head vulnerable to contact with parts of the car interior. The safety body says the 18-month dummy was contained during the same impact.

Standard safety equipment on the Korean people-mover includes driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags, electronic stability control, speed limitation assistance and ISOFIX child restraint anchorage points.

The safety result also sees the Kia join the Citroen C4 Picasso – a model due in Australia in the second quarter of 2014 – as the only two small MPVs to earn five-star ratings this year.

The fourth-generation Kia Rondo launched locally in June priced from $29,990. It is available with the choice of a 122kW/213Nm 2.0-litre petrol engine or a 100kW/320Nm 1.7-litre diesel.
