Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe design sketches released

Official design sketches of the Mercedes-Benz Concept S-Class Coupe have been released ahead of its unveiling at next week's Frankfurt motor show.

Mercedes-Benz tweeted the front three-quarter image (above) of the luxury two-door concept overnight, revealing a design far removed from the recently launched S-Class sedan.

The concept is expected to give an accurate preview of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe production car, which is set to make its world debut at the Detroit auto show in January.

Transforming the character of the S-Class Coupe is its adoption of the Avant Garde grille with large three-point star badge, replacing the sedan’s traditional multi-slat Elegance grille and bonnet ornament.

Sleek horizontal headlights enhance the coupe’s sporting intentions, further emphasised by its long bonnet with prominent ribs and aggressively styled front air intakes.

A side-on sketch reveals an athletic profile with flowing panel lines, short overhangs, shallow greenhouse and heavily raked rear windscreen.

The vertically swept tail-lights of the sedan also make way for elegant horizontal fixtures reminiscent of those on the SLS AMG sports car.

It will ride on a shortened version of the S-Class’ platform that should help it reach greater dynamic heights, with its sights set on the likes of the Bentley Continental GT and Maserati GranTurismo.

Mercedes-Benz Australia plans to launch the new S500, S600, S63 AMG and S65 AMG coupes in 2014.
