BMW i8: design details teased in new video

The production version of the BMW i8 has been teased just one week out from its Frankfurt motor show debut.

The shadowy 30-second clip provides close-ups of the plug-in hybrid sports car's wing mirrors, tail-lights, front-hinged scissor doors, headlights and blue-rimmed kidney grille, highlighting the finer details of its design.

The video also reveals the BMW i8's silhouette, in which its long, low bonnet and truncated, muscular rear end are emphasised.

The styling is one of the final pieces of the i8 puzzle, after BMW announced the details of its completely new petrol-electric propulsion system last month.

The BMW i8 teams a 170kW/320Nm turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine with a 96kW/250Nm electric motor for a combined system output of 266kW of power and 570Nm of torque.

The electric motor sits on the front axle while a six-speed automatic transmission sends drive from the combustion engine to the rear wheels.

Power is sent to all four wheels in hybrid mode, which enables an electronically limited 250km/h top speed, a driving range in excess of 500km, and claimed combined cycle fuel consumption of 2.5 litres per 100km or better.

BMW says the i8 will accelerate from 0-100km/h in 4.5 seconds or less, making it quicker than the current-generation V8-powered BMW M3.

The covers will come off the all-new BMW i8 at Frankfurt on September 10 before arriving in Australian showrooms in the second half of 2014.
