Alex my point is why pay for the extra cross members etc that are required to give the car the same level of structural/torsional rigidity - for the odd occassions when the roof may actually be down.. if you're not going to put the roof down anyway?

As for having a metal roof instead of a ragtop sure it might add a couple of extra kilos but convertibles aren't bought by those who want to go fast they are generally bought by people who prefer love to cruise.. yet they choose to cruise with the roof up.. go figure.

All in all to buy a convertible and not put the roof down is like having a 4x4 off roader and never going bush

Its all very well this business about soft v hard folding lids but let's address the elephant in the room shall we? Namely that BMW seems to be drawing inspiration from the animal world for its current styling; specifically that of the porcine ilk. Every new model has these two enormous snout-like apertures where once the lovely kidney grille used to be. What with Audi going the 'beaver'schnoz thank goodness merc is still executing some nice restrained German style.

I think this just goes on to prove that all the classiest and most upmarket convertibles are staying with soft tops. And why not? These days they're water-proof and usually as refined with the roof up as it would be with a hard top.
The facts are that the DB9 Volante, Vantage Roadster, Azure, Phantom DHC, A5 Cabriolet, Alfa Romeo Spider, Porsche 911 and Boxster, Jaguar XK etc. are all soft tops. The classiest and most luxurious, not to mention tasteful convertibles, GTs and roadsters are all soft tops.
Now, if you would read on - Ferrari California, Lexus SC430, Renault Megane CC, Peugeot 308 CC, BMW 3 Series Convertible, Nissan Micra CC. Do I have to go on? The only good looking ones I can think of are the Eos and the C70.
Folding hard tops should certainly not become the standard neither should they be expected on things such as this. They add weight, take storage space and add a certain cheapness to a car no matter how much it cost.

Just to say, I don't want to give the wrong impression, I like the Ferrari California, I just think it's a bit weighty at the back.

Wheelnut, you've made a couple of comments like that before when the topic is convertibles; why do you have to drive with the roof down just because it's a nice day? Have you ever owned a convertible?
It's more of a mood you have to be in or maybe something that you save for weekends than something you do all the time.
Whether it's worth paying the premium, well that's up to the buyer. I have had convertibles and they have been in England so you can imagine that I didn't get the roof down all that often but occasionally I did and when I wanted to, it was indeed worth it.

If this is a DE-Bangled 6, then I gotta say I like it. Sorry Wheelnut, whilst the Merc macrame SLK is nice I like the traditional touch of the rag top. (although when I had the 330ci, it was a bitch in the rain because rain on a cloth roof always reminded me of every time I went camping)

BM (+)(+),

I Looove BMW's engines, steering and suspension. But NOT the styling of certain models (guess which), or the way they tend to take their customers for granted.
As for folding tin-tops, they are not worth the weight or complexity.

I don't really like cabrios although this day and age surely it should have a folding tin-top?

I expect that just like 90% of all other cabriolets out there this will be another one which will be driven around in 30 degree days with the roof up - worth paying the premium?

If this is the post-Bangle BMW look I'm all for it.
As long as they finish the job by killing the X6.
