BMW X5 M50d: third-gen flagship diesel SUV officially revealed
The first official images of the all-new BMW X5 M50d have been released, revealing the diesel flagship's unique styling ahead of its local arrival later this year.
Sitting above the new rear-wheel-drive X5 sDrive25d, the xDrive30d and xDrive50 in the third-generation SUV's range, the new BMW X5 M50d is differentiated by its triple-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six diesel engine, M-tuned suspension and M design tweaks.
Outputs carry over from the existing model, with 280kW of power (at 4000-4400rpm) and 740Nm of torque (at 2000-3000rpm) transferred to all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.
Acceleration to 100km/h is improved from 5.4 seconds to 5.3sec, while combined cycle fuel consumption is now claimed at 6.7 litres per 100km – down from 7.5L/100km.
The front end features a more aggressive front bumper with larger side air intakes. Body-coloured flared guards front and rear and body-coloured side skirts replace the grey plastic cladding used on lower-specced models.
At the rear a lower, chunkier rear bumper is joined by large-aperture black-finished dual exhaust pipes.
Inside gains a sportier feel with a three-spoke M leather steering wheel along with Alcantara seat inserts and silver and piano black trim highlights. Model specific sill plates also team with exterior M badging.
The new BMW X5 M50d comes standard with 19-inch M light-alloy double-spoke design wheels and adaptive M suspension comprising dynamic damper control and air suspension fitted to the rear axle.
A dynamic adaptive suspension package is optional and includes dynamic performance control and dynamic drive active roll stabilisation. Larger 20-inch V-spoke light-alloy wheels are also available, as is Merino leather and contrast-colour seams and piping.
Local pricing and specification details will be announced closer to the new X5's fourth-quarter local arrival.
The existing model is currently priced from $147,500.
