Gumpert on the brink of collapse as investor withdraws funding: report

The Altenburg-based manufacturer – famous for producing the Nurburgring-blitzing Gumpert Apollo – announced overnight the investor that was to save the company from insolvency has pulled out of the deal, leaving Gumpert without financial backing.

Reports out of Germany suggest Gumpert has been forced to lay off its remaining 19 workers as a result, with funding and orders for new vehicles both drying up.

Gumpert declared insolvency exactly 12 months ago after failing in its plans to sell its supercars in the lucrative Chinese market.

The carmaker appeared to have been rescued in March when its founder Roland Gumpert confirmed it had secured a new investor. Gumpert announced plans to expand worldwide with new models based the Apollo (pictured), and revealed the company’s intention to unveil its first new cars at a “major trade fair” later this year.

Those plans now appear a distant dream, however, with the company faced with the decision to either secure new investment or wind up its operations that began in 2005.
