An ad created by German film school students showing a Mercedes-Benz running down and killing a young Adolf Hitler has drawn disfavour with parent company Daimler.
The clip, put together by students from Germany’s Ludwigsburg film academy, depicts Adolf Hitler as a child playing with a kite in his home town of Braunau am Inn, Austria.
As the future dictator reaches the middle of the road, a Mercedes-Benz C-Class is heard speeding up before a dull thud confirms the fatal contact.
Text regarding the car’s Collision Prevention Assist system then explains the premise of the ad, reading, “Detects dangers before they come up.”
Distancing itself from the controversial commercial, Daimler said in a statement, “We believe it is entirely inappropriate to use the death of a person/child or contents related to National Socialism in an advertising spot, even though it is a fictitious spot.”
The video’s director, Tobias Haase, defended his work saying, “Mercedes sells its cars on smart technology which prevents accidents – we wanted to pose the question of what might happen if technology had a soul.”
