Volvo V40 Cross Country: pricing and specifications

The high-riding Volvo V40 Cross Country is now on sale in Australia, joining the regular V40 hatchback to bolster the Swedish brand's small car range.

Volvo Australia's V40 Cross Country line-up comprises two variants, the $47,990 D4 Luxury and the $52,990 T5 AWD. The V40 Cross Country D4 Luxury commands a $2000 premium over the equivalent V40 hatch, while the all-wheel-drive T5 is $3000 more expensive than the front-wheel-drive T5 R-Design hot-hatch.

The D4 Luxury features a 2.0-litre five-cylinder turbo-diesel that produces 130kW of power at 3500rpm and 400Nm of torque at 1750-2750rpm. Volvo claims combined cycle fuel consumption of 5.3 litres per 100km and a 0-100km/h sprint of 8.3 seconds.

The T5 AWD gets a turbocharged 2.0-litre five-cylinder petrol engine with 187kW at 5400rpm and 360Nm at 1800-4200rpm. Fuel consumption is rated at 8.4L/100km, while accelerating to triple figures takes 6.4 seconds.

Both engines are paired exclusively with Volvo’s six-speed automatic transmission.

The V40 Cross Country sits 40mm higher than the standard hatch and sports typical crossover styling cues like black lower body cladding and silver scuff plates for a more capable appearance.  It also scores LED daytime running lights, black mirror housings, honeycomb mesh grille and silver roof rails.

Both variants are specified identically, coming standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, reversing camera and rear parking sensors, cruise control, leather upholstery, climate control, power front seats, and an eight-speaker audio system with seven-inch display, satellite navigation, USB input and Bluetooth phone connectivity with audio streaming.

The T5 AWD also features hill descent control, designed to remove the stress from negotiating steep slopes

Standard safety includes Volvo’s City Safety system, seven internal airbags (dual front, side, curtain and driver’s knee) and an external pedestrian airbag, advanced electronic stability control and torque vectoring, among other features.

The optional $5000 Driver support package adds blind spot information system and cross traffic alert, driver alert system, adaptive cruise control with collision warning and full auto brake, and park pilot assist.

Other major options include a panoramic sunroof ($2650) and metallic paint ($1750).

Unlike the Swedish-sourced V40 hatch, the V40 Cross Country is built in Volvo’s Ghent production plant in Belgium.
