BMW M4 Convertible spied for first time, Coupe in light camouflage

The upcoming two-door BMW M3 replacement, the BMW M4, has been spied in Convertible form for the first time, while its Coupe twin has been caught in the lightest camouflage seen yet.

Seen in standard BMW 4 Series guise with the roof down back in April, the latest images from CarAdvice’s spy photographers show the performance M4 Convertible model testing in Germany with its lid up.

Wearing black, large-diameter wheels fitted on top of cross-drilled brake discs and blue calipers, the M4 Convertible mirrors the highlights revealed by the BMW M4 Coupe concept.

Up front, deep front air intakes sit below a new double-bar kidney grille, sleek headlights and a power dome-equipped bonnet.

At the rear, LED tail-lights join an integrated boot-lip spoiler, flared wheel arches and the 'M' trademark of a quad-exit exhaust system.

When compared side-by-side with the M4 Coupe (pictured below) the Convertible’s roofline maintains a straighter line allowing for more rear passenger headroom than the steeply raked Coupe’s fixed roof.

Seen with camouflage hiding details such as the bonnet bulge, fender vents, side skirts, rear bumper and likely carbonfibre roof, the BMW M4 Coupe looks only mildly toned down from the aggressively styled concept car.

Heard earlier this month, the powerplant to be used by both M4 models – and the upcoming four-door M3 – is still yet to be announced by the German manufacturer, though, it will be a twin-turbocharged six-cylinder producing about 335kW.

Up roughly 26kW on the naturally aspirated 4.0-litre V8 in the outgoing M3, and bolted to a car confirmed to be lighter than its 1605kg predecessor, the new unit will help push the M4 to 100km/h in less than 4.9 seconds.

Back in June, BMW M division head of sales operations management Jorg Bartels also confirmed exclusively to CarAdvice that both manual and dual-clutch automatic transmissions will be offered.

The BMW M4 will sit atop the new 4 Series range due to go on sale locally in October, with the performance models – the Coupe, Convertible and M3 – to follow in 2014.

The BMW 4 Series will make its official public debut at the Frankfurt motor show on September 10, with the M4 and M3 tipped for a twin Detroit auto show premiere in January.
