Toyota & Subaru’s sports car 2 years away

March 4, 2009 by Alborz Fallah

The Toyota & Subaru low entry sports car is back! Some had suggested given the current climate, the project had been canned but new reports from Geneva say otherwise.

subarutoyota

The Toybaru, as some call it, will be the first car built by Toyota and Subaru. It will feature Subaru’s famous boxer engine and be driven via the rear-wheels. Many Toyota fans are seeing it as the revival of the AE-86.

There is no official name, only that it will be a dedicated sports car with a front-engined, rear-wheel drive setup with a good deal of emphasis on handling.

When is it coming? Two years from now according to a Toyota company official at Geneva. Whether or not both Subaru and Toyota will launch the car separately and in divide the markets is still unknown. However it will launch one way or another in Europe in 2011. Australia is still unconfirmed.

The Big T sees it as the replacement for the Celica, which has been discontinued for some time. You can find additional information on the joint project here.

Should Toyota launch the car in Australia, or should it come under the Subaru umbrella? Or both?

Sorry but thats only a CGI picture. Least GM have actually made cars that are due to be launched in 2011. It’s pretty ugly too, boring and bland. Guess folk who like driving ugly boring bland cars (Toyotophiles) will love it.

Dunno if the above comment is sarcasm.
But out of any manufacturers you use GM…

    lol…

Either way, Toyota should always have opted for the Celica to be RWD or 4WD. The mid 90s Celica (exception of GT-Four) and the next model after it clearly were mis-targeted to the wrong audience…. females.

I think this will be sold under Toyota in Australia IF it comes out at all… everyone is losing money and sports cars are very small in terms of market share and profit makers for manufacturers.

Subaru is a prestige brand in Oz and any performance cars they have are priced well above 35K in which this car has always been rumoured to be below…

I’d price it under 35K, with a turbo charge model at 40K.
To attract young people.. cut out the extra features, mainly electronics and it should be feasible.

Imagine how good the genisis coupe will be by the time this thing pops up again…

Just more proof that the koreans are just a step ahead at the moment. What are we doing wrong?

If they can find extra money…

I’m huge Celica fan and to know that they are going back to RWD makes me giddy in excitement. I have been deciding to get a new car as my GT Four is a little expensive on the repair side of things. Was looking at a S15 but I can wait 2 years :D

The only thing is the design is horrible. Good news there will be 2 versions, so… What ever one looks the best that’s the one i will be getting.

If they ever come with te-37 out of the factory Toyota or Subez can have my money NOW!

  7. Adam says:

Gee fancy Subaru and Toyota coming up with such a boring and ugly design!

  8. Shane says:

Hmmm, an imprezea crossed with a camry… should be interesting….

  9. billy_bob_119 says:

It should come out under Subaru because it looks to exciting and not boring to be a Toyota. If it was to go into a face lift and make it boxy, big and old man looking it would fit in well into Toyota. It looks like back in the days of the Celica and when Toyota use to have fun with car making.

  10. Horse says:

Subaru make a point of only selling AWD drive cars in australia.

  11. Frontman says:

So this is what you get when you put a paseo and Vortex in a dark room together??? A boring car that looks like it’s trying to hard to be liked :p

  12. Jojo bLo says:

The back of the car reminds me of the old 1994 Toyota Sprinter hatch!

So what happens if you combine the words “lame” and “ugly”…

    Yuck!

OMG Dan has made this comment on a Toyota thread :-o

  16. OSU811 says:

SUBARU should bring out a higher spec higher tune AWD version with a higher price tag, and toyota should bring out a lower spec RWD lower price version , both should come to oz to cater for two different markets!!!

  17. Shak says:

I want to drop this car off a clip, and do something to the CGI artists.

  18. Dan says:

“OMG Dan has made this comment on a Toyota thread :-o ”

I knew you would be impressed! :P Back at work from holidays :(

Seriously, this car looks too ‘bubbly’ for me…

But I’ll reserve my judgement when it comes out though, lots can change. Hopefully it will have some kickass perfomance!

  19. Lukaas says:

It wont even look like that IF it comes out.. or goes pass the stylign phase.

Extra front lamps?. Automotive engineering these days are pretty much reducing cost.. do you guys know lamps with wires, electronics can cost up to $20 bucks a piece.. and thats OEM price… imagine 100K a year production.. and that amount is HUGE.. for something not needed.. and in this case makes the car looks worse…

Not to mention the hard points,.. bumpers/bonnets these days (like last 2 years) are designed to be “soft”.. rigid enough but soft enough not to break bones.. crash/pedestrian requirements… they becomming really restrict…

all and all.. that CGI is basically.. just that..

the body shell however could look like that… from memory, the side view of that CGI looked nice… but the front itself looks too

  20. G says:

If it’s going to look anything like that CGI preview they can keep in Japan!

  21. Karen says:

    BRING BACK THE TOYOTA SUPRA!!!!
