Volkswagen Golf R Mk7 teased

The all-new Volkswagen Golf R has been teased ahead of its expected unveiling at next month's Frankfurt motor show.

Pictured in the shadows with few details attached, the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf-based performance R model is expected to be powered by the turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine already in use in the new Audi S3.

Combined with the petrol unit's higher outputs – the S3's 221kW and 380Nm is 33kW and 50Nm up on the current Golf R – and the Golf’s reduced weight – the Mk7 GTI is as much as 44kg lighter than its predecessor – the new Golf R should further improve on its spirited lineage.

Confirmed by Volkswagen to again feature the company’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system, senior board member Ulrich Hackenberg said in April that a target of 300bhp (221kW) for the Golf R “sounds good”.

Set to go on sale in early 2014, engine power is likely to be reduced when the car reaches local shores, with Australia’s ‘hot climate’ classification resulting in the S3 Sportback being de-tuned down to 206kW when it reaches showrooms in December priced from $59,900. Torque is not impacted at 380Nm.

The Golf R can trace its roots to the original Golf R32 from 2002 (pictured below), which used a 177kW/320Nm 3.2-litre V6 to propel it from 0-100km/h in 6.6 seconds.
