Toyota Yaris turbo hatch launched in Japan

The Toyota Vitz GRMN Turbo has been launched for the Japanese domestic market, boosting looks and performance.

Based on the locally badged Toyota Yaris and previewed by a concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January, the Vitz GRMN Turbo comes from the Gazoo Racing stable and is limited to 200 units.

Delivering 112kW at 6000rpm and 206Nm at 4000rpm, the turbocharged Vitz trumps its naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four-cylinder base car by 32kW and 65Nm.

Teamed with a five-speed manual transmission and exclusively tuned suspension, Toyota says the 1070kg three-door Vitz GRMN Turbo “conveys the joy of driving, from normal roads to circuits”.

The baby hot-hatch features an aggressive body kit comprising a deep front bumper, side skirts and a rear diffuser as well as LED headlights, a 'large-diameter' exhaust pipe, rear spoiler and an embossed GRMN logo in front of the rear wheels. Upgraded four-piston brake callipers join 17-inch BBS aluminium wheels.

Inside maintains the sporting theme with red/black sports seats, silver-faced instrument gauges, aluminium pedals, a leather gear knob and a three-spoke leather steering wheel with red stitching.

Available in Super White II and Black Mica, Toyota says the Vitz GRMN Turbo will be sold exclusively through an online application process priced at 2,700,000 yen ($30,860), starting from August 25.

In Australia, the 80kW/141Nm Toyota Yaris starts at $14,990.
