Infiniti G37 to continue alongside Q50 into 2015

The Infiniti G37 sedan will continue to be sold in the US until mid-2015, despite its intended replacement, the all-new Q50, going on sale from this week.

Infiniti USA has confirmed that a revised line-up of the Infiniti G37 sedan will be sold alongside the Q50 and Q50 Hybrid, though, at a reduced price to “reflect the product hierarchy with the … Infiniti Q50”.

Infiniti Americas vice president Ben Poore said the introduction of the Q50 enables the brand to pursue a two-pronged strategy.

"It creates room to strategically offer the repositioned G37 at the lower end of the near luxury segment in addition to the higher-positioned Q50,” Poore said.

“The two vehicles aim at different market segments and allow us to serve different customer needs."

Under the new US pricing structure, which takes effect from August 6, the 245kW/365Nm 3.7-litre V6-powered Infiniti G37 Sedan Journey costs $32,550 ($36,500), the G37 Sedan AWD $34,150 ($38,300) – a reduction of US$4800 for both. Available with optional Premium and Navigation Packages, the price doesn’t include a Destination and Handling fee of US$905.

Starting at $36,700 ($41,100), the 245kW 3.7-litre V6 Infiniti Q50 will be joined by a 268kW 3.5-litre Hybrid model priced from $43,950 ($49,200).

Infiniti’s decision to continue with the G37 sedan model, and its nameplate, comes despite Infiniti moving to a new Q-based nomenclature from 2014, which will result in the G37 Coupe and Convertible models being rebadged as the Q60.

In July, Infiniti spokesman Kyle Bazemore confirmed to Autoblog that the company was discussing extending the G37 sedan's production run, given it was, “talking Q50 up a little bit.”

“That allows us to keep the G Sedan in the line-up,” Bazemore told the US publication.

“It [the Q50] certainly started as a replacement, but it ended up being much more than that."

Infiniti Australia’s Peter Fadeyev told CarAdvice the G37 Coupe and Convertible would also be sold alongside the Q50 in our market once the luxury sedan was released in the fourth quarter of 2013.

“Q50 is not a replacement for the G37 Coupe and Convertible,” Fadeyev said, indicating the two models would only be traded when a new model arrived.

While Infiniti Australia is yet to make any engine announcements, Infiniti president Johan de Nysschen confirmed at this year’s New York auto show that a Daimler-sourced four-cylinder turbo-diesel would join the petrol V6 unit in being available in our market. The Q50 Hybrid is also yet to be confirmed for local showrooms.

Locally, the 235kW/360Nm 3.7-litre V6-powered Infiniti G37 starts from $75,900 for the Coupe and $87,900 for the Convertible. Fadeyev said, once launched, the Q50 would be “very competitive” with its German rivals such as the Audi A4, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class.
