Nissan announces GT1 Class NISMO GT-R

Nissan has announced its global motorsport program for 2009, including preparation of an FIA-GT1 class R35 model GT-R that will be sold to racing teams competing in Europe.

The NISMO-developed GT-R will run as a non-championship entry in four races during the season to assess performance and durability before the car is finally provided to private teams.

The car will be driven by NISMO racer Michael Krumm from Germany and Darren Turner from Gigawave MotorSport, a racing team based in Essex, England.

Nissan will also continue to compete in the GT500 class of SUPER GT, the highest level in Japanese domestic motorsport, with its R35 GT-R.

“Motorsports is an important part of Nissan’s strategy for building a strong brand with consumers who share our passion for high-performance driving,” said Carlos Tavares, Executive Vice President, Nissan Motor Co Ltd. “In addition to being an important touch-point for consumers, motorsports serve as a dynamic proving ground for automotive innovation.”

This year’s entries will feature an improved air-cooling system and a paddle-shift transmission, as well as modification to the body in order to comply with the latest regulation changes to decrease downforce through shortened vehicle overhang.
